The ancients used to believe the entire universe was naturally infinite waters. They literally believed that a man named YHWH built a hard dome to separate the water below and the water above. When the Bible and Quran call the sky a canopy or expanse they are being unironic. Ancient writings from the time periods confirm they really believed it was made of something hard like gemstone, glass, or ice.The muslim tradition says that above the dome is more water and allah's throne floats on the waters above. This was a literal belief not poetic symbolism. When allah asks if there is a crack in the sky, in the quran, he is being literal, because he wants you to reflect upon the perfection of the dome he built, people believed god and his angels lived above the dome upon an infinite sea, as mentioned in revelation when john climbs up stairs into the sky and enters a door in the sky and sees god on a throne on a sea lol.
