Why was Eugenics so popular for much of history to early the 20th century? What made people oppose it all of a sudden?

People used to value strength and dignity and honor, now they value weakness, emotions, cowardice, and flaws. Lol.

People saw it works with animals and wanted the same improvements for humans.

Liberalism. Getting forced to marry and have children with a person who gets chosen for you violates personal liberties.
People getting sterilized for even outright killed for having real or perceived genetic flaws is obviously even worse.
We saw where that can lead with National Socialism.

But honestly, people might try again soon, given the death of liberalism.

It makes sense. A people interested in the common good and betterment, that still accepts the hard choices necessary to do so, will find the idea attractive. A people that reviles hard choices and deludes itself that everything will magically get better without them will be repelled. Of course, hitler and the nazis made the necessary choices seem much harder than they really have to be. They thought that genodide and mass murder was necessary for eugenics.

And this guy thinks forced marriage and child birth is necessary.
But in reality, a gentle influencing of reproduction patterns, through cultural influence, targeted benefits and subsidized sterilizations/abortions is all it takes. East germany did something like that for a short time, and it had (limited) effect.

Honestly, considering how much misinformation and just plain warped impressions of eugenics exist, I think it wouldn't be a conspiracy theory to claim that cultural elites intentionally tried to make eugenics look bad, even beyond what the nazis were doing.
