>Probus ruled as Roman emperor from 276 to 282, a six year reign characterized by nonstop fighting against barbarian invasions. He was born in Pannonia Inferior and was in his early 40s when he assumed power; the Alexandrian Chronicle places his date of birth in 232 and he rose through the ranks of the Roman army to become a successful and well-regarded general. Emperor Tacitus appointed him supreme commander in the East with sweeping powers, which he carried out commendably. Probus was elected by the troops to succeed Tacitus in 276.>He defeated the Alemanni and Lugii tribes in Gaul in 278; it was claimed that he killed 400,000 invaders and completely annihilated the Lugii. Probus then crossed the Rhine and entered Germany, forcing them to submit. He rebuilt Hadrian's fortifications from the previous century and may have marched all the way to the Elbe, but finally accepted submission and tribute from the Germanic tribes. Probus also began allowing barbarians to settle in Roman provinces depopulated by war and famine. He additionally used soldiers to perform infrastructure projects and re-plant ruined farmland to bolster food production.
>Probus next fought the Vandals in the east; his generals also defeated an incursion by southern tribes into Egypt. He suppressed several usurpers in Spain and Britain. While planning to march against Persia in 282, the Praetorian Guard proclaimed their commander Marcus Aurelius Carus as emperor, against his wishes. Probus sent troops to put down this usurper, but they switched sides and allied with Carus instead. The remaining soldiers assassinated him at Sirmium in Pannonia during the autumn of 282. Some sources however claim he was killed by soldiers who objected to being used for infrastructure projects. Carus succeeded him as emperor and had the assassins executed.
