Terry Rasmussen was convicted of one murder and linked to six others in a multi-decade crime spree spanning from the 1970s to 2000s. He was known as the Chameleon Killer due to his numerous aliases. He was born in Denver, Colorado on December 23, 1943. His father, Peder, was of Danish heritage and his mother Anita was a WASP. Terry mainly grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and dropped out of school when he was 17. He enlisted in the Navy, served as an electrician, and was honorably discharged in 1967 after six years of service. Rasmussen got married not long after leaving the service and lived with his wife and four children in Phoenix and Redwood City, California.He was remembered by his family as an abusive head of a household, burning one of his sons with cigarette butts in one incident. Rasmussen was arrested in 1975 for aggravated assault, after which his wife left him and took the children. They last saw him that December when he showed up at their house with a new girlfriend, but they did not know her name. The divorce was finalized three years later.
Rasmussen drifted around the country following his divorce, living in nine different states before deciding to make his home in New Hampshire in 1979. Those who knew him claimed he sometimes had women and children in tow when he traveled, and he made a living as an electrician for various oil and gas companies. Residing in Manchester, New Hampshire, Rasmussen went by the name "Bob Evans" and worked at a lumber mill. During 1980, he was arrested three times for theft, passing bad checks, and diverting electrical lines. Rasmussen lived in Manchester with a woman who went by "Elizabeth Evans" but she was believed to be Marlyse Elizabeth Honeychurch, killed in the unsolved Bear Brook murders. These happened in the late '70s and Honeychurch, Rasmussen's daughter, and her two daughters were all found in trash barrels. However it has never been actually proven that Elizabeth Evans and Marlyse Honeychurch were the same person.The female that Rasmussen was seen with at Christmas '75 was his girlfriend Pepper Reed, 23, who was pregnant with his child. She gave birth to a daughter, Rea, a few months later. Reed vanished without a trace during the late '70s and Rea was later found with the Bear Brook victims.
Rasmussen began dating Marlyse Honeychurch, a 24 year old divorced mother of two girls, in 1978. She disappeared from La Puente, California that Thanksgiving after an argument with her family. Honeychurch left with Rasmussen and her daughters, 6 year old Marie Vaughn and one year old Sarah McWaters. None of them were ever seen again. On November 10, 1985, Honeychurch and Vaughn's bodies were found in a 55 gallon barrel in Bear Brook State Park in Allenstown, New Hampshire, wrapped in plastic. The cause of death for both was determined to be blunt force head injuries. On May 9, 2000, a second, identical barrel was found 100 yards from the location of the first, in which was the bodies of McWaters and Rea Rasmussen were found, also killed by blunt force head injuries. Investigators thought all four were killed at the same time and the second barrel was probably there in 1985, but they'd missed it back then. Honeychurch and her two children were not identified until 2019.Under the name Bob Evans, Rasmussen dated Denise Beaudin, 23, who vanished from Manchester along with her six month old daughter Lisa following Thanksgiving 1981. It was thought that he killed Beaudin somewhere in California, although her body was never found and her family did not then report her missing. Rasmussen retained custody of Lisa for the next few years and claimed to be her biological father. Under the name "Curtis Kimball", he was arrested in Cypress, California in 1985 for drunk driving while he had Lisa in the car with him and was charged with DUI and child endangerment. Rasmussen failed to appear in court, adopted a new alias, "Gordon Jenson", and abandoned Lisa at a Scotts Valley RV park a few months later.
Rasmussen was then arrested in 1988 for vehicle theft while going by the name "Gerry Mockerman", but his fingerprints were found to be identical to those of Curtis Kimball. He was charged with child abandonment and child abuse and sentenced to three years in prison; the child abuse charge was later dropped. Rasmussen was paroled after one year and immediately disappeared. His whereabouts for the next nine years are unknown and he resurfaced in December 1999 as Larry Vanner when California chemist Eunsoon Jun introduced him to her family and they tied the knot in 2001. Jun went missing that summer and was found dead in her home, buried under cat litter. The cause of death was blunt force head trauma. Rasmussen was charged with her murder in November 2002, plead guilty, and received 15 to life.
The court was not expecting him to plead guilty; Contra Costa County detective Roxane Gruenheid believed he did so because he heard her saying she was going to order a paternity test for Lisa, and he thought by pleading guilty he would avoid any further investigation into his past. He was proven through fingerprints to be the same person as Curtis Kimball and Gordon Jenson, and thus the same person who had abandoned Lisa in the RV park. A subsequent investigation and DNA testing found that Lisa was not his real daughter.Rasmussen passed away in High Desert State Prison on December 28, 2010 of multiple respiratory ailments.More advanced genetic testing would prove by 2015 that Denise Beaudin was Lisa's mother and Rasmussen wasn't her father. When Beaudin's father was shown a mugshot of Curtis Kimball, he identified him as Bob Evans, proving he'd been in New Hampshire when the Bear Brook murders happened. In 2017, it was announced that Evans was a suspect in that case, he was the father of one of the victims, but that that wasn't his real name and they didn't know who he actually was. Still trying to figure this out, police released a video of him being interviewed by detectives after he was arrested for murdering Eunsoon Jun. Shortly afterward, one of his children from his first marriage submitted a DNA sample proving he was in fact Rasmussen. The identities of Honeychurch, Vaughn, and McWaters were confirmed two years later. The middle child was identified as Rea Rasmussen in 2025 and that her mother was Pepper Reed; both had disappeared at some point after 1976.

Criminologist Jack Levin said he'd never before heard of a serial killer who primarily killed his close relations; by definition, said Levin, serial killers usually targeted strangers. Investigation into other possible crimes of Rasmussen's continued, particularly around what he was doing during periods of time when his whereabouts were unknown, especially the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, and it was unlikely that he stopped killing during those periods.Rasmussen lived close by where 14 year old Laureen Rahn disappeared from Manchester in April 1980. Denese Faneault, 25, lived near him and disappered from a bar two months later. Elizabeth Lamotte, 17, disappeared from the Youth Development Center in Manchester in 1984 after receiving a furlough. One tipster thought Lamotte was actually Elizabeth Evans, but DNA from her relatives proved she was a victim in the unsolved Redhead murders, which had no connection to Rasmussen. Lamotte's body turned up in Greene County, Tennessee on April 14, 1985, a few months after she disappeared; she was dead several weeks from blunt force and possible stab wounds, but the body was extensively decomposed. Lamotte was also in the early stages of a pregnancy and had miscarried shortly before her death.
After Lisa was found in the RV park, she was asked if she had any siblings. She said yes, but they died from eating mushrooms while out camping. Since Rasmussen was not known to have killed anyone between Beaudin's disappearance and abandoning Lisa five years later, her answer led investigators to think there must be still more unknown victims. One possible victim was Amanda Deza, whose body was found in a discarded refrigerator in Holt, California in 1995 and was also killed by blunt force head injuries. Deza was identified in 2023.
