Today we're taking a look at Sitting Bull. In Lakota his name is Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake, which translates to "Buffalo Bull Who Sits Down."

Sitting Bull (c.1831-1837 - 12/15/1890) was a Hunkpapa Lakota leader who served as both a spiritual and military guide for the Lakota during a period of conflict with the USA. He is well known for his involvement in Custer's Last Stand.

Some notable facts or feats include
>Born in the Dakota Territory with the name Jumping Badger. Nicknamed Slow because of his patience
>Achieved his name at 14 when he Counted Coup against a Crow in a raid
>Fought in the Battles of Killdeer Mountain and the Badlands
>Fought in Red Cloud's War as a war party leader. Refused to sign the Treaty of Ft. Laramie
>Crucial leader in the Great Sioux War of 1876. Rapidly became one of the leading Native Americans political leaders
>Annihilated George Armstrong Custer and his army at the Battle of Little Bighorn on 6/25/1876
>Pursued by the army, he led his band to Wood Mountain in Saskatchewan. Met Crowfoot and James M. Walsh during this time
>Returned due to hunger in 1881 and surrendered to the USA. Spent 20 months imprisoned in Ft. Randall before being returned to Standing Rock
>Met Annie Oakley and symbolically adopted her as his daughter, believing she was supernaturally gifted
>Joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show for 4 months, earning $50 a week. Although exorbitant, he gave away most of his money to the poor and homeless
>Spiritual leader of the Ghost Dance movement, prompting a warrant for his arrest
>Killed by two policemen during an arrest gone wrong which left 14 dead and 6 wounded

What do you think of the last Lakota to surrender?

>Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake
Why don't amerisharts call them by their original names? If everyone called people by the literal translation of their names, they would be called shit like "God is gracious" (John)

The Ghost Dance Movement is one of the saddest historical stories I've come across.
