Today's subject is Hannibal, full name Hannibal Barca.

Hannibal (247 BCE - 183-181 BCE) was a Carthaginian general and statesman who became famous for his campaigns against Rome during the 2nd Punic War.

Some notable feats or facts include
>Born in Carthage during the 1st Punic War.
>Attacked Saguntum in 218 BCE, starting the 2nd Punic War
>Invaded Italy with his elephants by crossing the alps. The subspecies used by Hannibal, the North African Elephant, became extinct around 400
>Commanded a mixture of Carthaginians and Celts, won victories at Ticinus, Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae
>Caused several Roman allied city-states to turn against Rome with his victories
>Successfully occupied most of southern Italy for 15 years
>Fabius Maximus utilized a war of attrition, now known as the Fabian Strategy, to gradually grind him down
>Carthaginian losses in Hispania meant no reinforcements for Hannibal
>Counter invasion of North Africa by Scipio Africanus forced him to return to Carthage. Defeated at the Battle of Zama in 202 BCE, ending the 2nd Punic War in a Roman victory
>Successfully ran for the office of sufet after the war. Political and financial reforms to pay Rome's war indemnity made him unpopular with both Carthaginian aristocracy
>Fled into voluntary exile to the Seleucid court and acted as a military advisor to Antiochus III
>Fled again after Seleucid defeat at the Battle of Magnesia to Armenia
>Betrayed to the Romans in Bithynia and chose to commit suicide by poison
>Considered one of the greatest tacticians of all time. Came very close to conquering Rome

What do you think of the man who vowed never to be a friend of Rome?

What if Hannibal taken main command of Seleucid army instead naval battle at Eurymedon?
>>
>>18710821
Did the Seleucid economy have the ability to sustain a longer war against Rome even with Hannibal's military prowess on land?

Couple the fact Roman can resupply own main city via river logistics.

He built roads.
On the alps.
By winter.
Roads.
For fucking elephants.
You telling me he couldnt build ladders near rome?

He just didnt want to take rome, just bend it to stop imperialism.

That was all the objective of his invasion.

I'm guessing he didn't think he had the manpower to conduct a siege of Rome. And he was probably right.

They still do. Just focus on eastern trade.
