Today we’re looking at Philip II of Spain

Philip II (5/21/1527 – 9/13/1598) was the king of Spain at the apex of its geopolitical power:

Some notable feats or facts include:
>the son of Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal, he grew up in Spain and was largely shaped by its culture and religious views, spoke Spanish as his primary language, and identified as a Spaniard
>was made regent of Spain at just 16
>his father abdicated as emperor in 1555, leaving Philip and his cousin Maximilian as co-rulers of his domains
>Philip was no soldier and abhorred the carnage of the battlefield, so he left war to his generals
>Spain's small population meant that the tax base was inadequate to fund Philip's ambitious foreign policy and the government defaulted numerous times
>the Moriscos revolted in 1569, were crushed, and expelled from Spain
>fought nonstop wars against the Dutch, French, Ottoman Empire, and England
>Philip's first wife Maria of Portugal died giving birth to his son Carlos, who became insane and died at 23
>he married Mary of England, failed to produce an heir, and left that country
>third marriage to Elisabeth of Valois produced two daughters who survived childhood
>fourth marriage to his niece Anna of Austria produced five children with one (the future Philip III) surviving childhood
>sent the Armada to England in 1588, only for it to meet disastrous defeat
>died in 1598 at age 71

What do you think of the man who foolishly sent the Armada?

Tyrant who tried and failed to invade England.

>What do you think of the man who foolishly sent the Armada?
It was not a foolish, improvised move, but a meticulously planned military operation that came very close to achieving its objectives. Philip II’s plan was to cross the English Channel to escort the Tercios of Flanders—led by the Duke of Parma and considered the deadliest army of the era. Had they succeeded in landing, a Spanish victory would have been assured. However, adverse weather thwarted the campaign: strong headwinds and unusual storms in the North Sea forced the Armada to sail around Scotland and Ireland, where gales smashed dozens of ships against the rocks. In reality, there was hardly any actual combat—unlike the English Counter-Armada of the following year, which failed even more catastrophically (Spain quickly rebuilt its fleet).

That's what the fool that placed the Spain of Philip II on the same level as Iran did; I’ve simply mocked him for it.

He lost to storms. That hag lost for real the next year (Counter-Armada disaster). And England ultimately lost the war and Spain continued to be the top dog.

And perfidious fire ships o algo. That war ended with a statu quo treaty with terms favorable to both England and Spain. The “top dog” Spain failed to beat a country a fraction of its size after 19 years of war. Pathetic.

>That war ended with a statu quo treaty with terms favorable to both England and Spain.
Sure, sure... that’s why the treaty was hailed as a great victory at the Spanish court, while in England it sparked deep outrage and was popularly dubbed a "humiliating peace." Hahahaha. The reality:

- The treaty compelled England to allow Spanish warships and merchant vessels to use, resupply at, and undergo repairs in British ports. Seeing the fleet of the Catholic power—which just years earlier had sent the Great Armada—freely enter English waters caused widespread humiliation and public fear.

- England explicitly renounced opening official trade routes with the New World, respecting the monopoly held by Spain.

- England pledged to immediately withdraw all military, economic, and logistical support for the United Provinces (the rebellious Netherlands), thereby breaking the 1585 Treaty of Nonsuch.

- The English could no longer use their ports to supply or shelter Dutch ships, leaving the rebels without their primary strategic ally in Europe.

- England acquiesced and allowed the Spanish to navigate freely through the English Channel, enabling the safe resupply of their troops in Flanders by sea, without relying exclusively on the long overland "Spanish Road."

- King James I was forced to ban letters of marque. This marked the end of legal attacks by English privateers on Spanish galleons laden with gold and silver from the Americas.

>The “top dog” Spain failed to beat a country a fraction of its size after 19 years of war. Pathetic.
Oh, they were beaten alright, just not invaded.

Not bad for a monarch who was fighting the Ottomans, the French, the English, and Dutch rebels simultaneously (and that was just on European soil).

What’s truly pathetic is the situation with the USA—the supposed top dog today—repeatedly getting humiliated by Third World countries (Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran...) and unable to control Hormuz.

Or, his generals did, anyway. Philip himself was no soldier and after witnessing the carnage of the battlefield at St. Quentin felt disgusted enough to not go near a battle again, so he just left warfare to his generals.

Bullshit. This is /His, stop making up ridiculous stories

>Philip himself was no soldier
He was more a bureaucrat who preferred to spend his time in his office handling paperwork, managing, and issuing orders. In fact, he spent most of his days working in his office, something unusual in an era when kings spent the majority of their time carousing, hunting, or indulging in leisure.
>>
>>18718394
he reportedly felt a superstitious sense of guilt when the Spanish artillery damaged a church during the battle
>>
>>18718399
He also murdered his eldest son lmao.
>>
His son Carlos was insane and an early example of Habsburg inbreeding starting to take effect. Carlos fell down a staircase when he was 19 and went into a coma. The famed physician Vesalius proposed trepanning his skull to relieve pressure on the brain. This idea was not especially well-received by the Spanish doctors, who were notorious for their medieval beliefs and assumed enough fasting and prayers would cure him. Vesalius finally did convince them to allow him to trepan Carlos. Unsurprisingly, the procedure worked and woke him from his coma.

Also unfortunately, his erratic behavior continued. Carlos ultimately had to be forcibly confined to his bedroom. He engaged in a hunger strike out of protest, a result of which he died at age 23.

Pretty much all clothing originated not due to religious or moral reasons, but due to environmental ones. there’s a reason why people in more temperate climates historically tended to wear very little if not nothing at all.

“Modesty” is artificial, there should be no social taboos or laws against nudity or minimal clothing.

It's the gayest country in Europe
>>
Spain went bankrupt at least four times during Philip's reign and the government's credit score was so bad that the Italian bankers wouldn't loan them money under any condition.
>>
Its a miracle how Spain had soo many enemies not just the British, Dutch, Portuguese, and French in Europe, but also Aztecs, Incans, and Mayans, in the Americas but also the Muslim Morrocans, Turks, Gujaratis, and Malays, from North Africa, West Asia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia especially after the Iberian Union, that despite fighting everyone else simultaneously, they won in the long term.

Nice of you to ignore that the British suffered an even greater defeat right after ;)
>>
>>18718703
And yet the economic situation was never that bad since the country could fall back on shipment of gold from the americas to start back. That's why unlike elsewhere in europe there wasn't much unrest among the population because the population was still living good.
>>
>>18719513
The gold from the New World went entirely to fund wars and buy bling for the Church and grandees. The average Spaniard was illiterate and lived only slightly better than some African tribes.
>>
>>18719526
>The average Spaniard was illiterate
So was most of europe
>and lived only slightly better than some African tribes
He lived better than all of eastern europe and better than most of the war ridden west too. There's a reason hundreds of thousands of Frenchmen went to Spain to do menial tasks during this era.
At least Spain didn't had to deal with massive religious wars with a comical death toll like France, Germany and to a lesser extent England.
>>
>>18719526
especially it was not invested in any industry. Spain remained dependent on imports for a lot of manufactured goods.
>>
>>18719500
Probably because the defeat of the Spanish Armada was actually history changing whereas if the english Armada succeeded it would have at most just resulted in Portugal becoming independent from Spain, something which happened later on anyway.
>>
Philip took advantage of the disastrous death of the Portuguese king in battle to annex Portugal. For a while Portuguese autonomy was respected, but under Philip III the Spanish started trying to absorb it as a province which angered them and finally triggered an independence uprising.
>>
>>18719603
>it would have at most just resulted in Portugal becoming independent from Spain
So it would have resulted in the second largest european empire breaking away from the first one but yeah no big deal at all. I think anglos just tried to shamelessly hide that defeat because it doesn't support their larger narrative.
>>
>>18718300
>and perfidious fire ships
Midwit take. It was the (((dutch))) that saved England by keeping Farnese bottled up in the Netherlands with the best Spanish troops.

>a country a fraction of its size
England and Castile had similar populations.
Rather England couldn't beat a country that was virtually taking on all of Europe and the Ottoman at the same time even with all their best effort.
>>
>>18718346
Yes, the narrative that England won the war stem from the fact that it remained protestant, but the idea that Spain wanted to make England catholic again, let alone conquer it, is highly debatable. The main Spanish war objective was to force the English to withdraw their military support to the Dutch and it was a success.
It also stem from the fact that the English had their own armada episode which, as far as human casualties and military performance are concerned, was an even bigger disaster than the Spanish armada. But that episode is conveniently never talked about by the English, in fact a majority of British historians are ignorant of its existence.
>>
>>18720512
Oh it's just *castile* specifically now lol
>>
>>18720523
Yes because the crown of Aragon never contributed to the war effort to the same degree Castile did. It's something rather well know. But even if you add Aragon it wouldn't make much of a difference. Spain would have at most 1 or 2 more millions inhabitants.
>>
>>18720526
Stop coping diego, it's not like phillip II decided to do some ironman shit and limit his resources for the armada to castile specifically
>>
>>18720528
He was also contending with the Dutch, the French and the protestants in Germany among others. So much for the small kingdom argument.
