In 1585, a large, punitive force was assembled to punish the Makua of Mozambique for their repeated attacks after the ascendance of a Chief Mauruça to power. The Makua were a large tribe stretching from the Zambesi to the very northern part of modern-day Mozambique, now consisting of 3.5 million people. The tribe was noted by the Portuguese for its "primitivity," its men and women wearing miniscule amounts of cloth, women sometimes seen wearing nothing more than a leaf shawl covering their privy parts. Nevertheless, they were fierce, skilled, and regular raiders who terrorized Portuguese settlements, likely thanks to the latter's seizure of their people. The expedition was launched with the help of numerous African auxiliaries who worked under the Portuguese, which formed a large portion of the force. Portuguese regulars made up the remainder. The army proceeded normally. Armed to the teeth with guns and top of the line equipment, they managed to successfully infiltrate the "capital" of the Makua after advancing around 50 kilometers inland with little resistance, burning the whole village to the ground. The main force of the fierce Makua, however, were absolutely nowhere to be seen. Ignoring this glaring absence, the force of 700 troops under the crown would be relentlessly ambushed as they attempted to return to their territory on the coast. The entire force was wiped out including the commander, and only two soldiers and some slaves would manage to, miraculously, see the light of day after numerous Makua descended from the jungle. The battle was considered the second worst defeat for the Portuguese in the century, after the disaster at Alcácer Quibir against the Saadi. This battle is an example of the myth of the "disease barrier." The force remained at near-full combat capacity for practically all of its existence. Its destruction was entirely at the hands of African Makua, who skillfully mastered the terrain to inflict a great defeat for the Portuguese.
