"Egoism" or Personalism (as Stirner called it) is more of a deconstructive method/critique of universals (spook/phantasms) rather then the idea of "fulfilling one's ego". In fact the idea of a self would be contrary to Egoism; since the self is a fixed idea. Stirner's method was a critique on how fixed identity categories, abstractions and mediated relationships are used to oppress and dictate the desires of individuals. It's critique of Authority is a psychological one, based on the idea that following the State (an abstraction) is ultimately following an ethereal phantasm. And becoming an Authority itself places one into a role were one ought to be listen too; which is a phantasm. As it constructs a self with fixed characteristics. Stirner's method was ultimately a dialectical version of Daoism (according to most scholars of Stirner).
