Most folkloric beings were actually thought of as spirits. Same with things like fairies and dwarves. The image people have them today as tangible, biologocial creatures is a product of 18-19th century fiction. Vampires basically just meant ghosts of dead people who come out and trouble you, make you sick etc. Most of the terms that today people think of as specific types of monsters like vampires, ghouls, fae, demons etc. were really just generic local term for "evil spirit" that people used to explain ilnesses and any misfortunes, and the details of the belief could vary village to village. It was just modern folklorists and fiction writers that gave them unique designs.
