I've heard the idea that the French Revolution gave birth to nationalism. What type of nationalism did they have? Was it like the modern chud version of nationalism, or was it different?

The 30 Year's what accelerated the formation of self-enclosed territorial units within Europe, but its general solution to the national question was top-down and based on enforcing the religion of the ruling dynasty on the population as a unifying cultural factor.

Nationalism, per the French model, was neutral to negative about the function of Christian sects and based themselves on the idea of a people declaring themselves to be such under a shared language and political identity.
