Yes. No one gave a shit about the Confederates or their place in culture (both pop and historical) until 2016. Outside of the most extreme of Republicans in the 1870’s, no one had any problem with what the South had attempted, and the confederate flag flowed proudly over multiple battlefields all the way up through the Iraq War.
