By West I guess you mean post-Christian Northern Europe. Catholic Europe and New World are for the most quite akin to Aristotelian Scholastic ideas about the family as the basic foundational element of the society (ie. Aquinas, Suárez, Soto, Albertus Magnus, Vitoria, etc.). And even Liberal Protestant writers as Locke, Hobbes, etc., shared the view of marriage between male and female as the first social contract and base of the family the first type of "society" as a whole.

It were XIX century German idealism and later on XX century French post-modernism the ideologies which, from a right-wing in German case, and left-wing in the French case; critized traditional ideas from the Medieval Christian past in order to push individualism.
