Why are Māori so misunderstood by the masses. Many people have never read a book about them but can recite 19th century propaganda made to justify land grabs. No, ‘Māori’ didn’t genocide the natives. Moriori we’re not in Aotearoa before Māori, two iwi of Māori do not represent all Māori, the Moriori were already starving to death due to Europeans taking all their food sources. The Treaty of Waitangi is and was a legal binding document that the crown did not uphold (despite being the ones who made it) Māori never signed over sovereignty and much land was confiscated rather than sold (a breaking of the contract)
But seriously, did they think they could intimidate real armies with those funny face dances? Or were they only reserved for inter-tribal affairs?
muh precious brown people could never be heckin baderino, only the white man!
>A Moriori survivor recalled: "[The Taranaki invaders] commenced to kill us like sheep.... [We] were terrified, fled to the bush, concealed ourselves in holes underground, and in any place to escape our enemies. It was of no avail; we were discovered and killed – men, women and children indiscriminately." >A Taranaki Māori conqueror explained, "We took possession... in accordance with our customs and we caught all the people. Not one escaped....."[41] The invaders ritually killed some 10% of the population.[38] Stakes were driven into some of the women, who were left to die in pain.[42]
>>18730449I dunno man seems pretty tame compared to say, Vlad the Impaler or the Thirty Years War or anything the Japanese did in WWII.
>>18730449>2 iwi do something>all Māori are somehow guiltyI don't see how 2 tribes are reflective of a whole race of people, especially when Māori were not unified. There are large differences within each iwi, especially South Island/North Island, even language was different. People do bad shit the world over. >>18730443insightful post, I can tell you put a lot of research into your opinions. >>18730265It served multiple functions, you want your men to be psyched up before a battle and not afraid of death. The one the world is familiar with was made in the 1800s and wouldn't have been used historically. Dance and song is part of Māori culture with lots of different meanings and uses.
>>18730513I've never seen any indication that the action of the iwis behind the slaughter of the Morioris were acting outside the contemporary cultural norms2bh as a (presumably) fellow kiwi I don't think anyone really gives a shit about this stuff, I suspect most non-NZers just chalk it down as example #242 of whitey chimping out against the innocent browns.
>>18730520>I don't think anyone (outside NZ)* etc etc
>>18730520sure but but violence is the world over, culturally too. If we consider at how recent Māori had come to NZ at the time of colonisation we have no idea how society may have grown. Culture isn't stagnant medieval Europe was brutal and there was countless examples of terrible acts of violence. the invasion also happened at a time of displacement for Taranaki māori so who knows what might have happened if Kai Tahu had met Moriori in a few hundred years, maybe Māori would have unified eventually or somewhat, we'll never know. we can easily see that some cultures within Europe, Asia have committed horrible acts of violence but we don't use this as a reason to demonise them, horrible shit happens during wartime. With Māori and Native Americans in particular it's just used as justification that their cultures were worthless and deserving of colonialism for moral reasons.
>>18730548I'm assuming whatever the narrative was about colonisation being justified ended decades ago, growing up in the NZ school system in the '90s/'00s there was never any explicit or implicit attempt to justify euro settlement because of maori savagery.
>>18730662'maori savagery'*
>>18730662when did colonialism end then?
>>18730237The maori must have more abbo dna than say, the samoans, they are much darker and less mongoloid looking.
>>18730887BAC fucked seamonkey women
>>18730513>I don't see how I do not think you even want to see>2 tribes are reflective of a whole race of peoplemaori are not a separate race, their society is relatively young and therefore sharing cultural background, so unless you want to argue that either these tribes were some sort of exception or that cannibalistic genocide is not part of maori culture and it just occurred to those two tribes out of nowhere, you have no case.
>>18730887Māori have no aboriginal DNA. Are you retarded? Totally different migration.
>>18730923It’s like saying a few viking ships plundering Scotland represent all Swedes.
>>18730513>Dance and song is part of Māori culture"dance and song" is part of literally every culture on earth you fucking retard
>>18730933Doesn’t make my statement false
>>18730237Who cares about the history and culture of a bunch of backwards tribal savages. Wow we discovered fascinating new face paint patterns, truly the pinnacle of civilization.
>>18730930it does.
>>18730990The only thing backwards is your mindset and lack of curiosity
>>18730990I care (they sailed to one of the most isolated places on Earth and built a rather unusual society there)
>>18730237What makes you think the treaty is binding? Parliament can and does ignore it whenever it feels like, and for good reason.
>>18730237Its the same case about most minor/smaller ethnicities and cultures.Their legacy is determined by "vgh"ing ethnolarpers who say they were actually hyperadvanced and the best warriors in the world in their heyday, and ancient propaganda made to make them look bad. Some also get later mythologization or romanticism (like sparta going from a complete joke to the supreme killing machines thanks to a comic book)Why this is happening? Because the average person doesn't browse pol and don't really think deeply about the history and legacy of the maori. Only Maori and dedicated Maori haters think about that, most people have no real feelings and just know what they've been told.
>>18730485>a brutal conquest and genocide is okay because an unrelated Romanian did something some timeYou realize that doesn't work, right? You don't let murders go because someone probably committed a more heinous murder at some point
>>18731928Just doesn't seem like something getting all ruffled about. If the Miorori are still around, give the descendants of the victims dominion over their ancestral homelands. And give the Maori the rest of New Zealand.
