Is Taoism compatible with Christianity?
>>18732698Not even Aristotelianism and Platonism were compatible with Christianity at all, Patristics took what was compatible of Platonism and Neoplatonism with Christianity and synthetized both. And Scholastics did the same later with Aristotelianism.
>>18732698No but it's certainly compatible with pre-Christian Greek philosophy
>>18732716Buddhism is certainly uncompatible with deist philosophies such as Aristotelianism and Neoplatonism. Buddhists reject to start with a first principle that many Greek philosophies accepted.
>>18732721Not really Gandharans didn't even practice Theravada, they very certainly had something like the tathagatagarbha or explanation for the unbecome, unoriginated and perfectIt actually hits really close to home for Neoplatonism, since it's just an older version and barbara version as well
>>18732716>NoWhy not?
>>18732728Gandharans was an specific Buddhist sect, not all Buddhism, just as those Christian heretical sects which turned God from a personal intellectual being into some kind of abstract "energy". Mainstream Buddhism rejects a first principle, at least the predominant trends today such as Mahayana and Theravada. And Aristotle was quite open about the First Principle being a personal intelligence thinking itself. That's totally uncompatible with all Buddhist trends.
>>18732698Taoism>ultra-minimalistic atheistic individualistic philosophy about chilling in lifeChristianity >overcomplicated clusterfuck of semitic schizophrenia (judaism) mixed with hellenic schizophrenia (platonism), that is not only theistic but theocratic, and is about suffering in this life for eating an apple >aka, the total opposite of TaoismWhy are syncretists like this? Do they get a boner everytime they ruin / mix totally opposite things?
Yes>t. Filipino Chinese Christians.
>>18732698Who cares, Christianity is based on nonsense and (philosophical) Taoism is actually coherent.
>>18732812kek
>>18732721>deist>NeoplatonismPick one
>>18732886You can pick both tho>God is perfect and, therefore, doesn't change>If God doesn't change, he doesn't interfere
>>18732812>ultra-minimalistic atheistic individualistic philosophy about chilling in lifeI love when people don't know about religions but romanticize them anyways. Please look into Taoism as an actual practiced religion, it's got an actual priesthood, gods (immortals), exorcisms, liturgics, magic, the whole shebang
>>18732990>>18732812>I really like TradcathsTradcaths be like
>>18732698>>18732990>>18732819Daoism as a religion (Daojiao and Daoism as a philosophy (Daojia) are two different things.Confucians condemn the Daoist religion.>Daoism as philosophy and Daoism as religion are two different things. Daoist philosophy was founded by Laozi in the Zhou dynasty and Daoist religion was founded by Zhang Daoling in the Eastern Han dynasty who says a deified Laozi made him Celestial Master.>And no this isn't a western model division. It's a Chinese distinction that even Confucians make between Daojia and Daojiao.Confucianism views philosophy Daoism as a legitimate competing school while attacking the religion Daoism.China literally has religious clerical institutionsDaoism has two sects, Zhengyi and QuanzhenZhengyi sect is led by the Zhang family (hereditary leadership in the male line), it has official religious clerics (Daoshi) who can marry and have children.Quanzhen also has clerics but they are celibate and live in monasteries. They are organised religions just like Christian churches like Catholic and Orthodox. It's just that the majority of Chinese do not follow these religions. (Majority of Chinese were never Daoist at any point)
>>18733553Zhengyi Daoism is led by a hereditary family (the Zhang family) just like Shia Islam's Imamate (the Twelver and Ismaili understanding of Imanate and nass). The Celestial Master chooses his successor from his male agnatic relatives.Just like Shia Islam has dhulfiqar, the Celestial Master has a sword passed on from Zhang Daoling.Daoism philosophy which emerged in the Warring States period is different from Daoism the religion, founded by Zhang Daoling in the Han dynasty. Zhang Daoling was the first Celestial Master.Religion Daoists believe that Laozi cane back as a god (Taishang Laojun) and appointed Zhang Daoling as Celestial Master and his male descendants as Celestial Masters and gave him his sword and seal. The Celestial Mastee also canonises new deities like the Catholic Pope canonises saints. The Celestial Master also determines the Daoist religious textual canon (Daozang).Zhengyi Daoist clerics (Daoshi) wear robes (daopao) whej doing religious work, but wear casual clothing in their daily normal lives. They conduct exorcism rituals against demons and pray for rain. They use and create talismans against demons. Most of them also have a regular job and they usually initiate their sons as clericsThat's why all the atheist retards claiming Chinese are materialists who don't pray for rain unlike Muslims or Christians have no idea what they are talking about.Zhengyi Daoist priests marry and are not celibate.Quanzhen Daoism was founded much later than Zhengyi Daoism, by Wang Chongyang.Quanzhen Daoist clerics are all celibate. They live in monasteries (male or female monasteries) apart from regular people. They wear their daopao robes all the time. The male clerics wear their hair in topknots (they don't shave like Buddhist and Catholic monks).Wang Chongyang appointed one of his disciples as his successor as patriarch of the sect obviously because its not hereditary since they are celibate.
>>18733557Also the seat of the Zhengyi Daoist Celestial Master is at Longhu mountain. That's where his mansion and temples are.Shaolin Kung-fu is associated with Mahayana Buddhism at Shaolin temple. Shaolin was originally attributed to Buddhist deity Vajrapani before the fake story about Bodhidharma inventing it was written in the 17th century.Wudang martial arts and Taichi are associated with Daoism at the Daoist temples in the Wudang mountains, said to be invented by Zhang Sanfeng.Chaquan is associated with Muslims.Daoism took over as the state religion of China in the Tang dynasty under Emperor Wuzong in 844-845 and mass persecuted other religions.Daoists banned Buddhism (both normal Mahayana and Vajrayana), Nestorian Christianity, Manichaenism and Zoroastrianism and destroyed their temples and churches and seized all their assets and defrocked all their clerics. You get a steady drip feed of bullshit on how Chinese don't have organised religion.Chinese do have organised religion.Pointing to syncretic Daoist-Buddhist-folk-Confucian temples, is like poiting to syncretic Hindu-Muslim temples in India or Southeast Asia, and using it to claim Indians have no concept of organised religions and that there aren't Hindus or Muslims but everyone worships both Allah and Krishna. The syncretic "three religion" temples in China have nothing to do with Orthodox Daoism (Zhengyi and Quanzhen) or Orthodox BuddhismNo, most Chinese don't go to both Buddhist and Daoist temples, they don't have altars where Buddha is next to Laozi.Folk religionists sometimes add most random gods but even they gave a core pantheon of permanent gods (earth god tudigong, kitchen God, Guan Yu).Zhengyi Daoists don't worship gods not canonised by the Celestial Master. And the seat of the Quanzhen Daoists is the White Cloud Monastery (Baiyunguan) in Beijing.
Hinduism and Islam don't exist as organised religions according to your logic because syncretic cults like Cham Bani Islam and Muslims following Sai Baba.Look up Satpanth
>>18733561>You get a steady drip feed of bullshit on how Chinese don't have organised religionThis legitimately pissed me off when I was doing a minor in Chinese studies and in a later semester I took a religious study intro class to fulfill a requirement
>>18732698Sure why not, Christianity can be combined with anything, just pick and choose from the Bible the parts that make it work, that's what everyone else does.
>>18732698Sure, every religion is compatible with any other religion or philosophy if you are willing to twist what it says and every single christian does it already as taking all it's doctrines literally would lead to a belief system not even compatible with itself.
>>18732698The surface level philosophy is sure. But the more esoteric and deeper lessons directly contradict Christian doctrine by claiming that the Dao is unknowable
>>18734274The essence of God is unknowable in Christianity too but there is the element of revelation, you know
>>18732698Tao "The Way" is very similar to the Logos from Greek stoic philosophy and in turn, Christ is the Logos of God in Christianity. When I read passages from Tao Te Ching some things sounded straight out out the sermons of Jesus: like that the humble will be honored and that those who exalt themselves will be humbled. Or how the sky nourishes all life whether people are kind of bad, and that people should take example from this. Or trying to be "like a child" in being peaceful and simple and not being involved in disturbing shit.
>>18732698Philosophical Taoism, like taking the Tao De Ching and Zhuangzi and applying its principles to Christianity, that can be compatible with some adjustments.Religious Taoism, such as with the Quanzhen and Zhengyi schools, no, as they're too intertwined with Chinese folk religion and blatantly contrary spiritual beliefs.
