When did you realise Chinese philosophers basically solved society thousands of years ago without leaning on any superstition or ridiculous fairy-tales? I can't name one thing that Mencius got wrong.

Christianity looks absurdly primitive by comparison. It's kind of embarrassing.

Did fucking Voltaire write this? I didn't think anyone still clinged to the old 18th century notion that deism or atheism was actually the primordial religion of ancient civilizations, and philosophy was its "rational" expression.

>When the sun or moon is eclipsed, people attempt to rescue them; during a drought, they pray for rain; and before making major decisions, they consult divination—these are not done because one can obtain what one seeks through such actions, but rather as ceremonial expressions. Therefore, a gentleman regards these practices as rituals, while the common people regard them as supernatural.

Rhinoceros horn isn't used as an aphrodisiac in Chinese medicine. It's used to cure cancer

Japanese, Koreans and Vietnamese all eat rhino horn too as medicine.

Japan imported the most African rhino horn from 1900-1980 then South Korea from 1980-2000 and now Vietnam from 2000.

Vietnamese killed their last Javan rhino in 2010.

This reminds me that the ancient Chinese concept of meritocracy was still being ridiculed in the 19th century England, that is during absolute peak of Western social achievements, kek.

doesn't tell me anything interesting outside of how the commoners and elites had different beliefs in any society. i mean, in India for example the high castes were the same way and only dalit peasants actually believe in a literal elephant man in the sky.
>>
>>18734737
The point is, the elite/scholarly version of Confucianism isn't complete bullshit unlike other religions. Even on the highest level of Christianity you have to believe physically impossible and archeologically debunked nonsense, and a whole lot of "just trust me bro".
>>
>>18734737
Accurate. Medieval peasants had a very vague idea of Christianity that was not much more complex than the pagan "pray to sky man, sky man make rain fall on crops" thing. None of them actually understood theology or Scholasticism or any of that shit. That was for the educated elite to argue over.

Christian theology is babby tier once you expand your horizons to other religions. There's really very little of a gulf between peasant Christianity and elite Christianity, which is part of its appeal, but since the industrial revolution it's sort of had the effect of invalidating the entire religion instead of just the silly vernacular practices like in Confucianism/Buddhism/Hinduism

Chinese philosophy was very good at its intended purpose which was preserving a static, orderly society where innovation is not rewarded or encouraged unlike the Western world where competition was encouraged.

nta but Western religions do not have anything like Hinduism actively and openly promoting rape and believing all of the gods rape/have raped people. surely you know that, Ranjeesh.

The Roman elite openly acknowledged that they were surrounded by legions upon legions of absolute mouth breathing monkeys.
And mind, the Senate literally paid top gold Sesterces for the equivalent of an incomplete edition of Paulo Coelho's works, which they consulted for advice during national emergencies.

The Indian caste system was a lot more amorphous than the British Raj caste system that succeeded it. Remember that the Company's armies were recruited from Brahmin farming communities.

Minor quibbles over soteriology do not constitute a gulf of the size between pure land (vernacular) buddhism and, say, shingon

>a gulf of the size between pure land (vernacular) buddhism and, say, shingon
It seems a bit unfair to compare a esoteric monastic sect with a esoteric lay cult, even if both are Tantric in nature. Of course theological discourse is going to be more complex than the veneration of local Saints.

As for that that minor quibble, it separated regular people from absolutely remorseless and fanatic serial killers and enemies of the State, aka Calvinists. It was funny and wink-wink-nudge-nudge in that context because it specifically makes fun of a conflict that used to set the nation on fire.

For Buddhism vs Catholicism specifically you're also ignoring that the last time the Catholic Church had to compete with other believes based on the efficacy of its magicks was back during the Dark Age. Meanwhile, all Buddhist Sects were actively rated and classified based on the power of their esoteric rites, which is why possessing and maintaining a lot of Sanskrit textual heritage and ritual practices was materially beneficial to them.

They were literally copying the west in the French revolution and Protestant reformation in England, Germany and France (Wars of religion) where the French revolutionaries and Protestants mass destroyed traditional culture, religion, artifacts, architecture and everything old

and copying Japan's Meiji restoration which mass destroyed traditional Japanese temples, shrines and castles and they only rebuilt concrete copies of them decades later.

Western Protestant educators in East Asia urged them to follow the west's example at destroying the west's own culture.
