Reykjavik 1972, a boy from Brooklyn sits across from the full weight of the Soviet state and the room is so quiet you can hear the light, Fischer has not slept the way normal people sleep in weeks, he has been at war with everyone including the people trying to help him, and now in the middle of the game the noise drops out completely and there is just the board and somewhere in the audience a girl moves and the sound reaches him and he registers it without looking up because at this depth of concentration the world does not go away it arrives all at once, and Spassky sitting across from him knows something has shifted because he was two games down and carrying the whole cold war alone and just stopped fighting the room and became it, and what followed was not a comeback it was one man defeating communism by himself.
>>18736161>Hurr when a random Soviet chess player loses that means Communism has been defeated!!!>Noooo when the Soviets beat us, even building the best videogame of all time Tetris, that doesn't man anything!!!!I hate retarded capitalist hypocrites. The only reason quality of life and work exploitation is worse than ever is because of the USSR no longer existing. The rich treated you capitalists better when they were fearful of Communism
>>18736161Fischer ran away from Karpov.
>>18736473>from karpovFrom the KGB and the entire Soviet cheat fuckeryRemember how that russki was literally caught cheating in a chess tournament? Many such cases
>>18736161>somewhere in the audience a girl moves and the sound reaches him and he registers it without looking upI love girls so fucking much
>>18736486And maybe vibrating buttplugs too for all we know. The one I mentioned kept taking "bathroom breaks" until he was caught
>>18736482No, from Karpov. Fischer even proposed a bunch of new rules that would make the match more advantageous for him, FIDE actually agreed on most of them, but Fischer then used the few they didn't agree to as an excuse to dodge the Karp.Reminder that Karpov-Kasparov games were on such a high level that Fischer thought they must've been prearranged compositions.
>>18736558Karpov never matched Fischer's peak rating, despite playing for much longer and into the 2000s. Karpov is my favorite player BTW, and I consider him the 4th greatest of all time. Fischer had he not quit at 29 would have realistically broken the 2800 barrier before anyone else even broke 2700.
>>18736598Peak rating is a meme. '75 Karpov was weaker than Fischer but stronger than Spassky, so an upset wasn't out of the question. The problem is that Fischer was an egotist bitch who couldn't cope with there being any chance of dropping the title to Tolya.By the beginning of the 80s, it would've been a tossup unless Fischer continued improving.
>>18736161Fischer is overrated by psueds. The best chess players have always been Russian
>>18736616Chudnus is the strongest player ever and he's some unholy mix of neanderthal and autist.
>>18736558the initial Karpov-Kasparov tourney in 1984 got called off when they kept getting draws for dozens of matches and both players ended up being mentally and physically worn down by it so they had to cancel the whole thing and try again next year, when Kasparov won the WC title
>>18736558>Reminder that Karpov-Kasparov games were on such a high level that Fischer thought they must've been prearranged compositions. No, see previous. Fischer thought the endless draws in the 84 WC match were pre-arranged and the whole match was a fraud.
so yeah, Karpov was awarded the title by default in 75 without actually doing anything. he defended it against Korchnoi in 78, who was older at age 47 but still gave him a hell of a fight. three years later when they played each other again in the WC match Korchnoi just folded like a carpet.
>>18736705>they had toBoth Kasparov and Karpov wanted to keep playing, but FIDE officials canceled the match because they were afraid that Kasparov, who was critical of the Soviet regime, might win.
>>18736724nta but that was a similar dynamic with Korchnoi, also a Soviet dissident, except he was a boomer when he played Karpov so there was no doubt Karpov would win while Kasparov was only like 21 and a dangerous new upstart
>>18736473There's no shame in that.
>>18736161Fischer could never have beaten Spassky if he just played a straight honorable game of chess like a man. He had to play outside the board mind games like a diva.
>>18737549Chess is psychological war with everything permitted, and Spassky can point to his own mistakes over the board for losing and nothing else. He lost the second match in 1992 too.
>>18737754Spassky really did not try very hard and seemed barely interested in defending his title.
>>18737916Spassky lost before the match, that’s not Fischer’s fault. Fischer probably knew the price of defending it and wasn’t interested either. The whole point proves Russian state sponsored chess domination, where they keep the title, name their champions, arrange games to make themselves look good. It was a shitshow, but no different than now.
>>18737925ha no, the Soviet authorities very much did want Spassky to win and were less than happy that he didn't
the Soviets really did ruin competitive chess in a lot of ways
>>18736705The 84-85 WC match dragged on for five months and a record 48 games. There were 13 consecutive draws (games 33-46). Kasparov won games 47 and 48 and it was decided to call the match off at that point.
>Chess openings that start with 1. e4 e4 are known as the Open Game, 1. d4 d4 the Closed Game, 1. e4 followed by anything other than e4 the Semi-Open Game, and 1. d4 followed by anything other than d4 the Semi-Closed Game. (additionally there are flank openings such as 1. c4 (English Opening) and 1. f4 (Bird's Opening) This generally refers to the type of positions that result from the openings. Bobby Fischer used exclusively 1. e4 when playing as White, saying "Generally speaking, e4 is best."
>>18736558>no from karpov>fischer even proposedFucking colossal retard. Fischer learned Russian by himself in a room. Karpov had 14 full time assistants and the entire USSR machinery doing his bidding. Of course Bobby was going to set all those conditions.
