Based on analysis of the population census of the Sanjak of Herzegovina c.1585 (which is somewhere around the time when Orthodox Vlachs in this area began to assimilate into Serbs), it seems that the Orthodox population of this area had about 30,000-35,000 Vlachs and 10,000-15,000 Serbs. This would, of course, indicate that modern Herzegovinian Serbs, who are a product of the mixing of these two groups, are predominantly Vlach in ancestry.However, we see that they are about 50-55% autosomally Slavic.The closer their percentage of Slavic autosomal ancestry is, to the Slavic autosomal ancestry of medieval Serbs, the more these "Vlachs" were, in fact, descended from Slavic farmers who entered the Vlach communities.In other words:If medieval Serbs were 70% Slavic, then mixing with Vlachs gave them only 15-20% more Paleobalkan DNA;If they were 60% Slavic, then mixing with Vlachs gave them 5-10%etc.Therefore, even though these Herzegovinian Serbs are predominantly Vlach in ancestry, it seems that the Vlachs from which they descend, ultimately carried a great amount of ancestry from medieval Serbs. So this seems to be genetic evidence, that the orthodox Vlach pastoralists of the Dinaric area, had a very great, if not majority ancestry, from medieval Slavic (i.e Serbian, since this was the only orthodox Slavic group in the area, and if the Vlachs were orthodox, it is likely the Slavs they absorbed would at least commonly be Serbs) farmers, who entered their society and pastoralist way of life. Besides the historical and linguistic evidence which exists for this in the first place. If anyone is more knowledgeable on this topic, feedback would be appreciated.
>>18738464The main thing which I am a little bit unsure of, is how much of the Slavic admixture in the Vlachs would have been Medieval Serbian.Since they were Orthodox, and the only Orthodox Slavic group around were the Serbs, it seems natural. But I am unsure of how lenient or strict these communities were when it came to interfaith marriages. Even so, unless they actively sought them out, a large part, if not the majority, of their Slavic admixture, would have been Serbian, or so it seems to be, logically.If there is any historical evidence concerning this, please let me know.
>>18738464Something else to be noted is that, there were certain Vlach tribes of Albanian origin, which entered these areas. They would have likely contributed a certain amount of Albanian admixture as well. But again, the genetic evidence seems to be pointing towards the conclusion that it was not very large, or else we would see a greater amount of paleobalkan DNA in present day Herzegovinian Serbs.Something which should also be considered are the haplogroups present in Herzegovinian Serbs.Furthermore, we are dealing with autosomal DNA percentages which are somewhat imprecise, and which are probably only broadly accurate. In this instance it could change a lot. Furthermore, we do not reliably know how much Slavic autosomal DNA Medieval Serbs had, due to very lacking samples, so we can only present a few possibilities, but probably know that one of them must be correct.
