How did domestic and international economists think the One Child Policy would impact China's economic development? What did they think would happen?
Source on those girls? They’re so fucking hot
>>18738990They legitimately believed shit like "The Population Bomb". Perhaps there was a point to the policy for like the first 5 years of it since it wasn't clear whether China will experience mass economic growth as a result of other reforms, but they maintained it to some extent until 2016(although it was never as coercive as its being made up to be).
>>18739109it wasn't really enforced in rural regions, just cities
>>18739109They should have dropped it 1o years earlier before it became a cultural thing to only have one child. As someone who grew up poor it's sounds insane to me not to have cousins or aunts/uncles.
>>18739288TBF their fears were substantiated by data. They had below-than-africa levels of GDP PPP growth during the Mao years coupled with one of the world's highest fertility rates in the world at the time (8 children per woman). They were dead fucking scared they'll have more people than they could care for by the end of the 20th century.
