When you're running a movement for gay rights in an era where just admitting that you are gay is life-ruining, you're going to get a lot of pedophiles that have no reason to repress their desires. There was no way to have good optics as a gay man, so why repress anything? They like men, they like boys, saying either is enough to get them fired from most jobs or publicly attacked.
