The West really should’ve let the Nazis and Soviets destroy each other in an endless meat grinder war. No lend lease to the USSR, no opening of western fronts in Italy or France, just let your two worst enemies commit murder-suicide.
It was percieved that Germany was at the brink of victory in the east, even in 1942. It was the core reason for the "Germany first" strategy by the US.We know with hindsight that the USSR could potentially have held on by their own, but back then even in the USSR the governmnet was on the verge of panic in 1942 ( a major reason for the 227 order).Allowing Germany to 'win' in the east would have been catastrophic for the allied cause since Germany would have the fuel it needed to contest sea and air.By 1943 the Allies had gained a foothold in continental Europe, and Lend-Lease was necessary to keep the wehrmacht in the east, away from the west.All this said, many allied leader did in fact have this opinion: "let them nazies and commies destroy each others"
