Was it a foregone conclusion that Japanese expansionism and their hunger for resources would lead them into attacking the Allied Powers and the United States? How strong were the voices in the government and military who were opposed to it? Why weren't they listened to? Even without hindsight surely they were already far too involved in the Chinese invasion to take the catastrophic risk of opening up the war elsewhere, they knew not to provoke the Soviets for example. I understand that France and Britain were uncharacteristically weak at the time and the United States still seemed to be militarily limited but surely it was simply an unnecessary risk to take considering the sheer economic potential of the United States and the possibility of Germany signing a separate peace with Britain and France. To my knowledge the war in China remained limited primarily to the army and therefore didn't require the navy to be fully fuelled up and constantly at sea so the oil issue seems like it could have been handled with a mixture of rationing and diplomatic/economic measures. General Pacific War thread as well.
>>18750555The japanese military were entirely captured by the Bushido code, which ment death before dis-izzat.They would not backdown and withdraw from china, they also killed liberal politicians who wanted peace. The US fleet had been sent to Pearl habour due to Americas adherence to Plan yellow, an 1890s plan which predicted war with japanesse samurai.
>>18750555It wasn’t inevitable. No oil embargo, no war. Without it Japan likely would’ve remained laser-focused on the guagmire in China, maybe attack the Soviets if the opportunity arises but it’s a stretch.
>>18750632Japan still would have invaded Southeast Asia. The IJN was arguing for a strike south strategy well before the embargo and the war in China had long since stagnated prior to the embargo as well, giving more weight to their strategy with them having gained more influence. Japan invading Southeast Asia means war with the Allies.
>>18750632>oil embargoThat was in response to the Japanese involvement in French Indochina, surely the Japanese command knew this would get a response by an already suspicious United States.
With a strong (non-FDR) USA, Japan wouldn't have been so emboldened.
The US slapped a full embargo on Japan, seized all of their assets, and demanded they withdraw 100% from China. War was a certainty. Now, if the US had been less aggressive, played hot and cold, war might have been avoided or at least delayed a year or more, when the US would be in a much stronger position. But FDR was a warmonger and a diplomatic dullard, so...
>>18750555>>18750632>>18750642 Japan needed oil for bomber planes, tanks and trucks not just warships. >>18750850What right does Japan have to unjustly demmand resources and land from soverign nation territory?
>>18751577That's not a sound arguement in the context of the time because the US was backing up two explicit, globe spanning colonial empires and occupied the Phillipines themselves. Colonies are just the extension and formalization of demanding the resources of other lands and people with raw force. More broadly every country, and none more so than the United States, would suddenly feel "entitled" to trade if sufficiently denied the ability to do it. Its not like if they were being made as isolated and economically squeezed as Japan in 1941 they wouldn't attack anyone and everyone if they thought that was their best chance of getting their way.

You can either hope to win big or lose it all....and yet they still did it anyway to try to pull a win in China and everywhere else. The only thing they have left is retards on the internet trying to justify this long after the war ended.Sure, Japan managed to pull out impossible victories against bigger powers twice. But it worked- until it didn't.With the benefit of hindsight the only way they could have won was to not play. Withdraw from a fight they couldn't win in the long-term (China) and try to save what they could. >>18755465No, siezing assets, and suddenly demanding Japan get out of China, and suddenly embargoing Japan are war provocative. But the warmonger FDR fancied himself as the world's policeman.
>>18755471The US had been firmly telling Japan to cease aggression in China since 1937. Japan refused to budge in any negotiations and instead kept antagonizing the US by jeopardizing their interests in China, threatening their territory in the Philippines, joining the Axis powers, and then attacking the US directly without warning. The US also had the right to cease material support to an antagonistic and hostile nation. Japan started the war.

Why did Japan need to illigally seize French Indochina? Again America allowed Japan to take the northern border region so Japan can "secure the border from bandits/smuggling" but them taking the entire colony was just land grabbing our and simple. Japan had no legal right to seize French land.

America saw their friend France getting kicked while it was down and they stepped in to help. America tried to negotiate and moderate but Japan wouldn't budge on anything. What right does Japan have to demmand America sell oil to them? What right does Japan have to unjustly demand land from France? What right did Japan have to illegally invade all of South East Asia with 0 justification? Because they wanted the land? Not a justified reason. An interesting example is how ordinary Japanese change their views about their government: In Meiji japan, they thought they were supposed to serve the state but after American occupation they started to think that the state is supposed to serve them. Do you know the Japanese term for "civil servant" used to be "Kanri" (官吏) - meaning "Emperor's representative/offcials" and that was changed after WW2 to be "Kōmuin" (公務員) - meaning "Public service worker". A reflection in the change of mentality that the state should be accountable to its people that Americans brought.
