Before Japanese products used to be seen as top-notch in reliability and quality, were they viewed as cheap inferior plastics like how Chinese products are viewed nowadays? Did the Japanese deserved that reputation at the time? Why were they trash, and how were they able to turn things around? Do you think the same can happen to China eventually?
>>18752623>Do you think the same can happen to China eventually? It's already happening. Chinese tech is astronomically better quality in comparison to other tech now than it was 10 years ago. Of course the bulk of made in China is still cheap trash but it's no longer exclusive to cheap trash.
>>18752623They were seen as cheap alternatives to western products for maybe like 2 decades at most, but by the 1970s, things like Japanese cars and trucks were already starting to carve out their own niche in western markets
>>18752628The Chinese can't move upmarket because then they'd have no economy lmao. Japan was able to move upmarket because China took over making cheap shit
>>18752623Anecdotally I can say so. My father is really old (70+) and I have heard him randomly call badly made trash Japanese on ocassion. Having old parents is interesting sometimes. Once when I got real thin my mother said I looked like a Biafran lmao.> Did the Japanese deserved that reputation at the time? From what I've heard, they were cheap crap. So yes.> Why were they trash, and how were they able to turn things around? They were made cheaply, quickly, with the intention of out-competing products from developed economies in a country that had not yet become as technically sophisticated as them. Their designs were often derivative or outright plagiarized, made in bulk. AFter a while they just made enough money to up their game and transition into into more refined forms of industry with their own technology base.>Do you think the same can happen to China eventually? It's already happening. I think it's the last country that will be able to do that though.
>>18752628I have to get my chinkshit routed through North Macedonia because of the monkeys in the EU, they gobbled cock from Amazon and Zara and got bribed by retail giants to put nonsensical tariffs per package on anything you buy. >>18752640Are you dumb? A ton of the low value industry is moving to Vietnam and co, even Mexico, because knowledgeable Chinese workers are too expensive by comparison.
>>18752640China has already moved upmarket. They won't do so entirely because that would be nonsensical since they make such a fortune off cheap manufacturing, but again, they're no longer exclusive to that as they once were. They both produce cheap low quality products and high end products that rivals Japan and Korea.
>>18752646>A ton of the low value industry is moving to Vietnam and co, even MexicoThat doesn't make economic sense, China has a workforce of a billion people, Vietnam and Mexico do not. The only alternative to Chinas global market niche is distributing manufacturing across multiple third world countries, it doesn't make sense.
>>18752663>manufacturing across multiple third world countries, it doesn't make sense.Literally whats happening and what's been described ITT. Lots of manufacturing moving to Bangladesh, SEAsia, Central/South America, etc
>>18752659>>18752646>>18752643>>18752628China does not make high end products anon, sorry I had to be the one to tell you this

>>18752646China will still be around to pump out cheap shit as I don’t see them growing beyond the per capita wealth of Bulgaria. They simply have a scale unmatched for cheap industrial goods. Only India has the potential to usurp that place from them, but they are an economic/social/political basket case still even when their favorable demographics should allow them to be making more strides.
>>18752670Higher end than they used to. Which does exemplify a progression.
>>18752663>>18752669>>18752646vietnam and mexico somehow have lower wages and worse worker safety than china. the only country that can't manufacture shit is india because they're too incompetent

>>18752623>Did the Japanese deserved that reputation at the time?canon, nikon and a bunch of other japanese brands literally started out at chinese style knockoffs of western brands. I think it was nikon but one of those companies original names comes from trying to scam people into thinking it was leica

>>18752623Oh hell yeah they were.Anon back at the end of ww2 japan was still a half-feudal society in some ways that had been literally firebombed to the ground in pretty much EVERY major city, with the exception of the two that got nuked.America successfully "managed" japan to ensure they got back on their feet (and most of the credit for that should go to the japanese culture, regardless of the competence on America's part there) but they were still very much a struggling secondary nation that had nearly all of its industrial capacity blown the fuck up.The actual START of their shift began in the 50's when they started copying quality control methods from america. It just took a long time before the old stigma was erased.I would also wager that a lot of that stigma came from how GOOD american manufacturing USED to be until it started getting all outsourced as well. You mentioned the 80's?Perfect timing. By that point a bunch of shit was outsourced.
>>18752646>Are you dumb? A ton of the low value industry is moving to Vietnam and co, even Mexico, because knowledgeable Chinese workers are too expensive by comparison. It's not, at least not in the way you think.Vietnam took final assembly of some Chinese products, but they still assemble sub-components made by China. There's more to Chinese economy than just cheap workforce.
>>18753095Feudal has became a meaningless word it seems.Iirc Japan was an outsourcing hub in the 1920's already, as for QC I'm not entirely sure it's just American, for instance you wouldn't look at a Honda and HD from let's say 1975 and claim HD has better QC as the oil puddle underneath it gets bigger with every second. That being said I think their motorcycle industry was extremely quick to get to the "Japanese reliability" level, probably faster than the other products

>>1875267080% of the US commercial drone market is DJI. >"That doesn't mean it's good"Means we're such fucking garbage we can't compete with a shitty company then, so we're apparently worse than the worse.
>>18752674Sorry, that's crazy. Even if the rural masses of China stay dirt poor forever, the more urban classes constitute a ridiculous fuckton of consumers with ever-rising standards and expectations. There is a massive domestic market for decent products and a very large market for luxury as wellEven if the Chinese thought they could just dump low-quality garbage on the world forever, it's not like domestic industry would just ignore the domestic demand forever. As it is, quality's gone up quite a lot in exports, even in the short term.
>>18752663>The only alternative to Chinas global market niche is distributing manufacturing across multiple third world countries, it doesn't make sense.Yes it does make sense because in summary it's cheaper than doing it in China. Why? Because the retards from the West basically gave China their whole industries during the late Cold War(outsourcing) which the Chinese learned and replicated so much so that they went from an irrelevant third world country with a lot of people to being a threat to American hegemony
>>18753503no, you didn't understand what I meant and are worthlessly resorting to hyperbole.japan still clung to many aspects of feudal society even during the meji restoration with its industrialization.
