>Butler arrived to take command in New Orleans after the city's fall in April 1862--it was only a short amount of time before this one-time doughface Democrat who had tried to get Jefferson Davis on the Democrat ticket in 1860 became the one Yankee Richmond said would not be taken prisoner and if captured would simply be hanged on sight. Butler earned the nickname "Spoons" for rumors that he personally stole silverware from New Orleans homes and he also hanged a professional gambler named William Mumford who ran to the top of the US Mint building and tore down the Stars and Stripes.>Worst of all, Butler had wickedly denigrated Southern womanhood. The men of New Orleans quickly calmed down and accepted the Union occupation, but the women remained viciously defiant. One attempted to dump a chamber pot out a second story window onto the head of Admiral Farragut as he rode through the streets, after which Butler passed an edict that went "Any female caught in the act of showing disrespect or defiance to a member of the United States military shall henceforth be treated as a lady of the town plying her trade.">Nonetheless, in part because of rumors that he was involved in cotton smuggling and other corrupt activities, Butler was removed from command in New Orleans in November and replaced with Nathaniel Banks.
Based. Greatest president who never was next to Henry Wallace.

>>18753544The thing that always stands out the most is reading about the treatment of women and churches during this time. In no other war in American history were American soldiers ever so savage to a defenceless populace. If you were to tell a GI fighting the nazis that every church in Germany had to be burned down and any woman who complained had to be jailed, they'd call you insane, but in the War Between the States, it was seen as perfectly normal. Southern leaders restrained their men and held to traditional rules of war, but unfortunately this chivalry was not returned on the other side.
