Killing trees has significance to Christians at that time because in the Bible, Jesus kills a tree outside of Jerusalem which doesnt bear fruit so killing live trees was probably associated with demon magic and the supernatural.

>> In historical witch trials, property damage and agricultural failures were routinely blamed on the occult. Alongside accusations of killing a pear tree, the tribunal accused Anne of far more severe offenses, including murdering five to six people (including a young child) by casting sickness on them and using her servant as a "steed" to fly to demonic gatherings on the mountains of Lyderhorn and Fløyen.
