Muslims place all emphasis on rote repetition and memorization, putting a text in front of you and reciting it like a madman until it drills completely into your brain. Millions of Muslims around the world have memorized the entire Qu'ran into their heads using this method. Muslim children are locked in a room and given portions of the text to memorize and they are not allowed to leave until it's drilled into their heads.Why was this method of learning not respected in the West?

Because Quran is the literal word of God in Islam. You have to learn it by heart in Arabic or you're doing it wrong. Any western learning is based on learning the laws and principles most of the time.

In Shakespeare’s time and for centuries afterwards, Latin was taught by rote memorization. I’m old enough to remember having to learn and recite numerous poems in school, as well as multiplication tables and various factoids. We had to memorize Bible passages in Sunday school though nothing like what’s expected of Muslims. The west might not be as rigid and autistic as Islam but we used to do a lot of that kind of stuff before whatever hippie crap kids are doing now.
