What was life like during this time?
>>18757090Pretty comfy anywhere purple unless you were close to the border and the Poorsians were planning their next controlled chimpout. Same as before in the Kingdom of Odoacer, the province ruled by Syagrius or the one ruled by Nepos. Sligltly worse than before in the Visigothic realmMuch worse than before if you cared about religion in the Vandal realmAbout the same as before in the Frankish realmNo idea how the Burgundians ruled their lands at the time but I'm assuming not that badly considering they did not have to put down any major rebellions
>>18757090probably luscious for those in scotland, ireland and germania especially the rulers. no more worries about young men being wild when they can just send them to destroy rome
>>18757090why is corsica so irrelevant overall despite being in the literal center of everything
anybody alive in 480 ad would've died during the plague of justinian
Quite bad almost everywhere. The barbarians are probably the least of your concern although they were a danger. Its moreso the crop failures and disease and all around high prices for everything because faltering trade markets. But if you were some sardinian herder life was fine I suppose.
You’re living it right now. Actually now is worse because instead of Germanic immigrants you get jeets. Otherwise it’s the same>>18757114“Comfy” isn’t the right way to describe it. I would say it was more of a stabilizing of things. Obviously the WRE had been struggling for a long time at this point. The barbarian kingdoms calmed down what had been a very chaotic situation for the past century. These peasants had spent their entire lives getting BTFO by raids, famine, and civil war. Still hard times but it was definitely an improvement over having the Huns or Vandals breathing down their necks.
>>18757464I think you misunderstood my comment. I was referring to the ERE as comfy, especially after they got most of the G*ths to leave the Balkans
>>18757090Not ideal, there were famines, bagaudae stomping around and political instability, but the worst was yet to come about half a century later, with the epidemics and climate catastrophes of the 6th century. A peasant in AD 550 wishes he had been a peasant in AD 480.
Okay if you weren't a slave. If you manage to survive to the late 530s, you get to watch yourself and most of your community starve to death during an ice age
better than anything before and after. unless you were unfortunate enough to end up in the oriental despotate of the GREEKS
