Why were Art Deco and Stalinist the last great Architectural movements?
Why did everything become modernist try hard minimalist and post-modern shit tier garbage after that?
Why is it that the modern "return" is just to throw up buildings with facades look like they were built in the 18th century, instead of actually working of new evolution of architecture from where Stalinist/Art Deco left off?

Architecture is an art form and art demands that boundaries be pushed and new frontiers of creativity be explored. How boring would it be if every building was some trad classical revival style

Economics probably. The whole shift was just constrained maximization at work and a broader shift towards instrumental rationality in design.

Stalinist and Art Deco had a lot of classical and imperial influence. Also Egyptian stuff (kind of interesting) and there was a lot of fascination with ancient Egypt in those days, a lot of archeological discoveries going on. It's very "historical" in the inspiration with people trying to build monumental looking things recalling various historical epochs.

Also an interesting hybrid now is China which still has kind of monumentalist state-led "communist" directed propaganda campaigns but the architecture is the sleek, glass, modern stuff. See:

It's not just chipop but state television chipop. That's what you get when the government runs the media and the songs that get aired have to be about being optimistic and being happy at your job and stuff like that.

Not as bad as what we get here.

art deco and art nouveau are peak modernism. why do people who don't actually care about architecture complain about it? can you name a single contemporary school? for some reason, i doubt it.

yeah dude i hate contemporary architecture. it's just so minimalist post-modernist, you know? its like woke modernist anti-trad goyslop.

Doesn't make the line go up as much.

For some reason people lump Neo-Futurism in with other Postmodernist styles even though its a distinct thing

The real answer is that starting in the mid-20th century there was more of an emphasis on construction that favored the comfort of building occupants rather than just "looking neat". Enabled by newer understanding of structural and material science which enabled buildings to be more "transparent" to its occupants while still having desirable thermal properties. Broadly speaking, most modern styles fall under these principles, which have come to be known as "structural expressionism"

State directed aesthetics and art movements might offend fags. Im serious

After the devastation of WW2 people began to look to the future for hope rather than the past. This was compounded by the incredible technological leaps made during tbe cold war. The idea of building upon the past felt suffocating, and people began to want the sleek, futuristic look. Which happened to also be cheaper and lower effort. We're currently feeling the hangover from that era.

When normies say modernism or modern they usually mean contemporary stuff
