Welcome to Vedic Studies General! In this general we discuss the history/philosophy/religion of the Vedic Tradition.>What is 'Vedic' anyways?Vedic means relating to the Vedas, the ancient sacred texts of India, and or to the historical period and culture associated with them. The Vedic period in India lasting from c. 1500 BCE to c. 500 BCE>Where do I start with my Vedic studies?Start with the Foundational Texts!>Bhagavad Gita (and consequently the Mahabharata)https://ebooks.tirumala.org/downloads/The%20Bhagavad%20Gita.pdfhttps://ia601804.us.archive.org/17/items/the-mahabharata-set-of-10-volumes/The%20Mahabharata%20Set%20of%2010%20Volumes.pdf>Upanishadshttps://dn760105.eu.archive.org/0/items/upanishads01ml/upanishads01ml.pdf>Tattva Bodhahttps://namarupa.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Tattva-Bodha-1997.pdf

>>18768172Isn't it a bit anachronistic to use later Indian art & architecture to illustrate the Vedic period when that period produced nothing of the sort? I'm legitimately puzzled over the fact I can't find almost anything from the Vedic period or the second urbanization. And just a few centuries after suddenly Indian art appears like a fully formed tradition. I assumed they mostly used wood or something.
So do Hindus actually believe that there were people with multiple arms and the heads of elephants that really existed at some point?
>>18768219its just for aesthetic reasons to be honest >>18768237Fundamentals yes, but other all it really depends on what type of hindu you are talking about as hindu is a very broad term.but most take it as just metaphorical to symbolise, like the multiple heads (such as Lord Brahma's four heads or Shiva's triple-faced forms) represent different directions, perspectives, or emotional dimensions (like blissful vs. fierce natures) of a single divine reality.although if you could be a bit more precise, i can help.

>>18768172I hate how you all use "Vedic" as a polysemous term to describe anything in India. "Vedic" refers to the Bronze Age pastoralist peoples who lived in the regions to the north of the Indian subcontinent around 1500 BC—not to mention the strange oxymoron some people create when they speak of "Vedic Hinduism." The "Vedic"—or Aryan—period focused primarily on *yajnas* (rituals) and nature deities such as Indra, Agni, and Varuna, as well as the maintenance of cosmic order (*Rta*). Texts like the Bhagavad Gita emerge from a completely different historical, linguistic, and theological context. I mean, are you aware that the Vedas were composed orally in an extremely archaic form of Sanskrit with a grammar and phonetics vastly different from later Sanskrit—right? The Gita is composed in Classical Sanskrit (not the archaic Vedic dialect) and arose during the era of great syntheses and the Bhakti (personal devotion) movement. None of this is Vedic. ALSO the gods in the Gita such as Indra have already lost their central role, becoming secondary figures within a monistic/theistic theology centered on Krishna. There is no continuity with the Vedic period. And I also find it ironic that you’d post this kind of architecture... especially when we’re talking about clan-based peoples who lived in villages or small settlements—or even in tents, given their nomadic lifestyle! Hahaha.>UpanishadsThey represent the bridge of transition (and of rupture) between the archaic Vedic world and classical Hinduism. so...
>>18768398You forgot the most important part: they were white during that period.
>>18768398You are right, the reason why i called it Vedic general and not Hindu general is because i wanted to open up discussion relating to history too
>>18768413>written by AI but rewritten by a human>using an AI programnice try.Besides, I’ve already tried these tests, and they are highly contradictory; I got varied results depending on which device I used and what kind of language I employed. Tip: I used AI to write this post—I asked it to summarize things over and over again. Look at the result, lol
>>18768445>Generative ai ≠ Discriminative ai
>>18768448You do realize that these tools for deducing whether something was written by AI are highly subjective and depend on many factors, right? As I mentioned, sometimes even the language you use can cause a text to be flagged as AI-generated. I usually run my English posts through Google Translate since my native language is French to check or correct them; this often results in some odd word choices that these tools then label as AI-written. That’s exactly what happened with the names of Vedic deities and the term used for the sacrificial ritual. I’ve tested this with German and French as well, and the same thing happens. please, try again saar
