>Hood was given command of the Army of Tennessee after Davis panicked at Joe Johnston's retreat down through Georgia, giving up steadily more and more territory. His fighting prowess had been proven on many battlefields, but his ability to be an army commander was more questionable. >Upon hearing the news, Sherman asked Hood's former West Point classmate John Schofield what he was like. The latter replied that Hood was remarkably stupid, had accumulated numerous disciplinary demerits at the academy, and nearly failed to graduate because of his poor mathematics skills; Schofield had helped him out with exams so he could pass, ultimately graduating near the bottom of his class of 1853. He admitted that he now regretted having helped Hood with his exams. Still, Schofield cautioned Sherman that while Hood wasn't very bright, "he's sure to give you a hell of a fight."
Jo John was extremely conscious and didn't want to engage the enemy directly. That doesn't make him a bad commander as see bellow. If anything he was running circles on the rest.Lee knew the Confederacy has limited life span and every battle they "win", they lose a shit load of troops. Hence why invading Pennsylvania and Pickett’s Charge really was his last roll of the dice. Normally he won't make stupid moves like that, but he was left in a situation where he either destroyed a Union army and got recognition of France and UK or lose.John Bell Hood lost the Battle of Nashville, which "ended of the Army of Tennessee as an effective fighting force". A literal entire army was destroyed.
>>18770324a guy who graduates near the bottom of his class was probably not army command material. it was pretty much a given that a brigade was about all he could handle.
>>18770333His wiki is telling>Hood's impulsiveness led to high losses among the troops under his command, especially as he moved up in the Confederate ranks. Bruce Catton wrote that "the decision to replace Johnston with Hood was probably the single largest mistake that either government made during the war."
>>18770333of course Grant only finished in the middle of his USMC class and Sheridan graduated pretty far down. top ten finishers included McClellan and William Franklin, so...meh.
>>18770333there weren't too many viable army Confederate army commanders left by 1864. Hardee had been offered command of AoT and declined the job as he didn't want all that responsibility.
>>18770339>McClellanliterally a traitor (it's confirmed he was a fifth column for the secessionists) >William FranklinIn theory, the bridge crossing made sense. In theory I said. In reality it was a disaster how it was done. The one union general I will defend ot the death is John Pope. He was given the short end of the stick and was the fall guy. The way he was demonized was compete bs.
The one guy they had in the West of any worth, and that is to the degree that Eastern-style skirmish has any military value to holding territory, was Albert Sidney Johnston, and they literally shot him in the back.

>>18770657Johnston lost big chunks of Kentucky and Tennessee by pinning everything on a couple of river forts. Shiloh was going well until he bled out though it could have gone better if he had gotten his forces moving quicker from Corinth but at that stage of the war it was like herding cats and the Yankees were just as slow. But yeah, he was regarded as the best in the west and might have proved himself over time. There were some good generals in the west who fell afoul of political drama like Richard Taylor and Patrick Cleburne. Franklin Gardner put up a stubborn defense of Port Hudson against overwhelming odds. Not sure how Forrest would have done with a larger command.
>>18770345Franklin was a McClellan dickrider and never displayed any real talent as a general.
>>18770842Forrest was not a trained soldier, he would never be given the command.
>>18770846Agreed. He was good at what he did but would have been way over his head with a major army. Brice’s Crossroads was brilliant but not a major battle with large numbers.,
>>18770846for similar reasons Sherman gave the AoTT command to Oliver Howard when McPherson bit the dust even though John Logan was the ranking general in the army, because Logan was a political general.
>>18770676This guy was pretty retarded - only good at cavalry skirmishes and massacring unarmed POWs based on their skin color, neither of which takes much brains
>>18770343Hardee was also not very good and literally didn't know how to do anything but the same en echelon attack in every battle he fought.
>>18770870>and massacring unarmed POWs based on their skin colort. Tulsa Tranny
>>18770335Sherman was delighted when Davis replaced Johnston with Hood. He knew Hood would be aggressive to the point of foolishness. In the two battles of Franklin and Nashville, Hood was a disaster. He resigned shortly after.
>The battles around Atlanta had cost Hood around 20,000 casualties, nearly a third of his army--once, an Army of the Cumberland soldier on picket duty encountered a Confederate picket and called out to him "How many more of you fellows are there left?" The Rebel wrinkled his brow and replied "About enough for another killing, I reckon.">The final assault was made at Jonesboro on August 31 when Hardee's corps attacked the Army of the Tennessee and was repulsed with a loss of 2,200 men to 1,700 Union casualties. Atlanta was occupied by the Union troops the next day.
