>>18771674The American Civil War occured with the aftermath of the 1848/1849 Revolutions in Europe. That's how I read it. If the Confederate elite had won, the US would had been turned to British crown/nobility control.
The South in terms of social and economic development is Eastern European tier bordering on being outright third world and that's with free association with the largest economies in the world and over a century of reconstruction. Can you imagine just how dire their situation would be if they were independent?

Depleted soil, still have the boll weevil epidemic, constant slave rebellions, and really pissed off poor whites because Confederate currency was worthless and the only idea the Confederacy had to fix it was to just start attacking everything and trying to annex more land to hand out to veterans. The most the Confederacy could hope for is that Britain and France would be willing to prop them up but there's no guarantee of that because they didn't need southern cotton as badly as the Confederacy thought. This isn't even considering what the US or Mexico might do.
