Ancient Coins.
Ancient coins, because I like them, and so should you.
Descriptions are in the file-names, but I will offer some more commentary as I go.
They will be (very) loosely in chronological order, but I need to explain some basics first.
>>
Rule #1 of Ancient Coins: "Of" does not mean whose head IS ON the coin. "Of" means who MADE the coin.

This is coin OF (made by) Julius Caesar, but it shows Venus (an alleged ancestor of his).
>>
Rule #2: Ancient coins tend to be thick. Some of them are so thick that the background of the coin will be slightly out of focus.

Someone made an over zealous test cut in this gold coin, showing how thick it is.
>>
King with spear and bow is very typical of early Persian coins.
>>
Another Spear-Bow-King, but this one is silver.
One of the cool things about ancient coins is that time and the violent manner of their creation make it so that no two are the same. Some kind of centuries long chemical reaction has made this one look like it's on fire.
>>
Most of the images on these coins weren't cast, they were struck.
A blank coin (flan) was heated up, then placed between two dies, then hammered. Hard.
>>
Ancient Greek City-State time. No Owls though. Athens is overrated.
>>
Because they were hammered, dies wore out quick. Sometimes the dies were repaired or outright replaced by artisans other then the maker of the original.
Hence this Lion that looks like something from HR Giger.
>>
Early reverses consisted of a just an incuse punch.
>>
Lesbians actually had some nice coins.
>>
Stunning example of coin from Syracuse.
>>
...and a less stunning example. When you do front facing portraits, the nose wears down very quickly.

I'm somewhat of a numismatist myself.

Now you're paying attention.
>>
Herakles wearing the skin of Nemean lion. Famously made by Alexander the Great and his successors.
>>
Every successor put Alexanders head on their coins at some point, but I like the ones by Lysimachus the best. They seem to have more variety.
>>
Speaking of successors, they also made coins in their own images.
>>
>>
>>
>>
Meanwhile, Carthage was becoming a thing.
>>
Also the Roman Republic.
>>
Barbarian man, presumably conquered.
>>
Barbarian woman.
>>
Then this guy shows up.

...and some stuff happens...
>>
One thing led to another, then this guy becomes emperor.
Romans tried really hard to squeeze all of their official titles into their coins. Romans loathed the idea of kings so much, that emperors for the next several hundred years would write something along the lines of the following (loosely translated into the modern equivalent)
First among equals - Head of the Church - Commander of the military - Head of State - Father of their country
instead of just saying king.

Coin of Augustus featuring Agrippa, one of the greatest Bro's in all of western history.

Good thread.

Gold piloncito coins. Indonesia, 8th-10th century AD

Are they all from your personal collection? If so that's a fantastic collection anon!
I myself have few dozens tetradrachms (and bunch of denarii/staters/drachms/sigloi/..) but most aren't in great condition like the ones you presented.

The toning on this one makes my dick hard

Ha! Nope. I've just collected the images from various auction sites, coin catalogues, museums etc.

Under appreciated emperors: Nerva
>>
This is a base metal coin, there was no need to test the metal. I guess somebody just really hated Nerva.

Sometimes damage just makes coins more interesting.

Julia Maesa. One of the baddest women of the ancient world.

that one looks awesome

Elgabalus. Often considered to be a bad emperor, I consider him to be comically incompetent rather than bad.

It's not often that you see long, straight hair, interesting

Gallic and Celtic coins are interesting. Very detailed, but seldom realistic.

This is a good thread
