Just for the record, your previous medieval coin thread was NOT killed by a "simp thread". It was killed by this thread specifically:

Not saying that "simp" threads do not dominate this board, but in this case this was what the killing blow was dealt by. Looks like mods deleted it because it was a rather pointless thread with only a single image, but the damage was done. Take care not to leave your thread on page 10 too long if you wish to avoid this happening again, whether by a "simp" thread, or otherwise.

Somebody clipped the whole center of the coin out. Not sure if it was for some sort of fraud or what.

From my understanding, when this "coin clipping" happened the center piece would be passed off as a real full coin, and the "chisler" would take this outer ring of precious metal and then melt it down and redeem that for its intrinsic value.

It seems highly unusual that the clipped outer ring would survive intact up to the present like this. Usually it would be the other way around.

Anyway, this is where the process of "knurling" on the rim of coins originated. This is done to try to foil clipping like this. You can see the legacy of this even today on modern quarters and dimes, but its rather pointless now as these coins have no precious metal to make them even worth clipping anymore.
