how did you learn?

also i assume you use references right?
if so how do you go about it?
do you get just one or a lot, and do you try to copy stuff from them or just glance for specific spots?

I'm occasionally asked to make posters to promote live shows, but it's not my main job.
I started out drawing pictures using analogue methods, and then learned realistic techniques using plaster cast drawings.
When drawing pictures like the one above, I use photographs as reference material.
They are particularly useful for recreating lighting and space.
The final adjustments are largely based on the light, shadow, and depth haze I learn from actually seeing natural landscapes with my own eyes.

did you start doing cast drawings as part of some class or book to get better or did you just try to copy them yourself and figured it out?
i assume it was because you weren't getting the results you wanted just from drawing, right?

Rather than being taught any particular techniques, I simply experienced the standard of drawing.
However, what I learned about expressing shading, lighting, shadows, and reflected light to make a picture appear three-dimensional using just a pencil is something that can be applied to colored paintings and digital art as well.
