Hello /ic/!

I've obtained a prescription for (generic) Adderall and wanted to experiment on how it affected learning to draw. I opened this thread to document my progress and for everyone else's observation / amusement.

My goal with this thread is to simply take an Adderall and draw for at least a couple hours a day and post the results. Realistically I may miss some days. The hope is to keep these threads ongoing until I'm either satisfied with the progress documented, or I crash out.

Probable Questions:
>Are you actually diagnosed with ADD / ADHD?
Yes, ADD. I believe inattentive. Been diagnosed since 2003 but never treated long-term.
>How old are you?
31.
>Do you work?
Yes. Full time with a very emotionally draining job.
>Are you on the spectrum?
Undiagnosed but I'm pretty sure. High functioning if so.
>Are you Asian?
No, white.
>What is your drawing experience?
I would doodle as a kid but dropped it in my mid-teens. I took and dropped a starter drawing class in college that was mostly figure studies. Good teacher but I had shit motivation.
>What is your struggle without Adderall?
A mix of getting frustrated when I don't get the results I want, and a hard time peeling myself from other instant-gratification activities like vidya and YouTube. I also have shitty handwriting which may be correlated to a lack of clean lines.
>Do you actually enjoy drawing?
Whenever I draw a stupid face in MS paint or graffiti with a pencil somewhere, I do enjoy drawing a silly guy.
>What study materials are you going to use?
I'm mostly going to stick with shapes and studies for now. I have a few artist friends and am well aware of the "/ic/ makes you worse" meme, so I'll mostly lean on them for advice and questions.
>What are your goals?
It would be neat to get good enough to do commissions for a little extra crash, or at least save money by not commissioning and drawing them myself.

First for a control group: this is my drawing without any adderall.
>Attempted lizard from memory
>A rabbit plush thingy I have on my desk
>Decided to draw a silly guy
>A single cube study
>I use to be able to draw the female midsection, but apparently not anymore
>Attempted this cat elf character I like

Took the adderall toughly 15 minutes before drawing again. Went for that mentioned 2-ish hours. In order:

Oak leaf because favorite tree.

Tried drawing a Six-lined Racerunner. I picked a couple of lizards because they were the one thing I could draw as a kid but turns out they're pretty weird to draw. I was silly for thinking that they had shoulders and hips when they're just tubes with limbs sticking out.

Acorn I found on the ground.

I tried to do a meme cat but the action shot was passed my level and he ended up looking round.

Blurry stock photo of an acorn sprouting.

Fucked up cube. I need to do more fundies.

Attempted to draw Crazy Redd's Ginko leaf from animal crossing. Didn't get the shape right at first and tried to do a more toonish outline. Then I decided to give it some detail since conveying the solid color wasn't as fun.

How can you be 31 years old and unable to draw a fucking cube? Im convinced people like you literally see the world differently. Like maybe your brain doesnt process visual information and everything is hazy? Or its like colorblindness. Idk. You're able to use the English language and navigate websites. So youre not retarded. But I dont get it. Anyways. When I was on Adderall I just ended up watching classic wow streams for 16 hours a day and never had an appetite. Now I believe adhd is completely fake and adderall is bullshit.

>How can you be 31 years old and unable to draw a fucking cube?
That's the 3rd cube I've drawn since elementary school. Didn't spend long on it with most of the time spent trying to figure out where the points would meet up with how it was connecting in my brain. As fast as I did it, I wasn't able to translate from my brain to paper and hand. On that aphantasia scale, I'm 2.5ish.

I was convinced ADD was BS too until I took a dose from a friend and was able to connect one task after another. Stuff otherwise feels like I need to start a task, drop, pause, reboot. Sometimes trains of thoughts just straight up drop.
I'm not able to tear myself away from the PC to do something I need which I chalked up to discipline (which is also why I thought it was BS), but a little more research mentioned that it balances the hormones and dopamine payoff in your brain which can help solve motivation too.

This will be closer to my normal time posting. Yesterday I had work off.

Tried doing a cube I was visualizing my head. I definitely struggle with steep angles.

Did a less steep cube from my head again. The faces feel more correct than the first one. I keep wondering if I should try this with a straight edge.

Tried drawing my eraser only to find out that it would be a no erasing challenge if I moved it.

Wanted to try drawing a cherry stem but but the leaves ended up being more than I bargained for. The stem thicker than the reference picture too. Thinking about how the leaves and cherries layered though was fun.

Tried drawing a cross with no straight edge. Burned myself out on the cherry stem and it was even harder I think. The way lines disappear into each other isn't something I can put onto paper just yet.

Kot sitting from behind.

Nothing, but it does have to do with an inability to focus on any task that doesn't immediately give you the happy brain tingles.
Apparently, it also stabilizes my mood and makes me less able to get cranky at work. So that's something.

Box stuff overall is definitely on the radar since it's definitely a catch all for perspective and how shapes change as depth moves. I considered that backgrounds are on my list of things I'd love to do, which 100% calls for some boxes.

Another cube from my mind, I feel good about the right face mostly but the lack of steady had makes things more crooked than I imagine. I felt like I could imagine ahead of time how the lines work.

Using a straight edge. Is this cheating?
Update: Used it at first and felt good about the right face, only for the other faces to feel less good. Tried my best to finish it.

Crow on branch, the beak was the hardest part but soon as I got a sense where where the beak should end vs the eye coming up with the rest of it came a lot easier. The crow as a little shorter than it was supposed to be but I didn't give it enough canvas space.

Gameboy on my desk and then i drew the arcade pattern on my desk mat only after I put it away.

In the last 15 minutes of my 2 hour timer, I tried to draw one of the patterns on said desk mat. The mix of curved edge with straight lines is something to get use to. Same thing with the Gameboy.

Hello anon, this is a fun idea, I hope you're enjoying the doodles.
I think your referenced drawings are quite good for a complete beginner, but you seem to really deeply struggle with perspective, even with simple boxes and boxy shapes. You should probably focus on that for now. Although if you think it's boring to just draw boxes all day, it doesn't matter so much. As long as you keep filling out your little notebook, you'll be a lot better at the beginning than at the end. And if you get frustrated at moments, just keep in mind that those the ones where you're learning the most.

I don't see why not!

>>7852072
>complete beginner
Not sure if I fall in that since I have doodled and taken (half of) an art class before. But this is certainly the most serious I've been going at it so the bar might be low enough to call it beginner.
>You should probably focus on boxes for now even if you find them boring
I actually finding them a bit engaging and when I manage to get a face right it does feel nice. I keep feeling a sense of how it should look while I'm staring at the paper but putting it to line isn't as easy.
My thought was mixing some boxes for warm up before drawing a larger more focused thing, but I was for sure thinking of needing to practice cubes more since I want to know perspective for sure.

The crow is only as good as it was because it was a side profile, I think. Definitely want to learn more than side shots and 1:1.

Been taking methylphenidate (Ritalin) for the past year, and I've progresssed a lot.
I've had multiple days in which I've been able to do studies for 13+ hours straight.

I've decided that if my psychiatrist ever takes me off the meds I will simply buy meth and start micro dosing it.

Personal advice, if you have ADHD, as I have, there's a certain amount of hyperfocus that you are able to tap in without the stimulant, try to abuse that natural hyperfocus near the start of the day and take the stimulant after that runs out in order to maximize gains each day.
Also, if you aren't doing it already, start working out. Working out not only is good all around, but helps me pass out and sleep like a baby despite the stimulants whenever they run out.

1) Another square from brain, picked a bad spot for it.

2) From reference. What tripped me up a lot was figuring out if the perspective made the vertical lines parallel, but no it removes the parallel.

3) From reference which I could feel how this one should look, but I feel like I spent too long trying to make sure lines are parallel and centered.

4) spent a little w while on this before deciding to try being a little less precise and just follow where felt it should go. Not feeling the left face as much.

5) No reference, tried doing it as fast as possible with whatever popped to mind.

6) Focus starting to suffer, the 3 to 11 oclock of this I forsook trying a straight edge and just going for what my brain saw. I don't feel it's perfect but it still feels right.

7) Still felt like focusing and wanted to do a non-box tonight, drew a rabbit semi quick.

>>7852694
>If you have ADHD
I think I have inattentive ADD. The doctor didn't ask questions or really dig into it, they just just "aite" after I mentioned the behavioral health consult pulled up my previous dx.
>Use your regular hyper focus and then use the stimulant
That's essentially what I'm doing. I'm taking it after work or at the tail end of work, a single 4hr quick release dose when I was prescribed 2 a day.
>Start working out
If I eventually conform to sleeping at 10PM or something I considered it, 24 hour gym super close to me. Go at 4AM. On my meds I have good motivation to want to do stuff.

Had a couple days of the adderall causing my to wake up at 4AM randomly, so I think that wore on me today. Gonna try making up lost sleep.

1) Tried a square in under a minute no reference.

2) Tried drawing the square left to right , learning that I run into a challenge with the last face I draw. Used a brief reference at the end to figure out the last part.

3) Couldn't figure out the bunny's back foot so I gave up and gave him a sneaker. I felt good about the head mostly but kinda went down from there.

4) Tried a sneaker at low energy, dropped mid way.

5) Drew some random lines which looked kind of like a sail. Definitely too tired tonight.

1) Cube... rectangle from reference! Or a least it started with reference. I'm having a harder time lately looking off of the picture vs just drawing what I feel should be there, but I don't think that makes it better.

2) A little rectangly but I feel better about this one.

3) Went for a symmetrical one, felt pretty solid with this one. Caffeine + adderall has me a little too zooted to keep my hands precise.

4) Same thing but reversed don't feel as sure on this one.

5) Chipmunk from study. They're pretty dumb looking animals. The power left portions were covered by leaves I didn't draw, so I had to make up an approximation.

6) Twig with berry from study.

7) With my last 10ish minutes I tried a fast cube.

One night of regular sleep was instantly followed by another randomly waking up at 4AM, so I'm taking half of the regular amount to try curving that.

1) Cube from imagination.

2) Someone told me to try a method where I place dots where I feel they should go and connect them. I'm not super able to just eyeball where the dots should go but I think this turned out fine for how weird it felt.

3) Another study of the 3D rabbit I stare at. Totally fucking up the feet. I wonder if I should just go with "I think this is how it should look" over relying on my eyes to much". Underside angles are also a bit tricky.

4) If this looks the same in 10 years, I know I've matched the CHAMP.

5) Cherries from study.

Another half dose today couldn't take a full one early enough. Also wanted to use a finer point so I grabbed a mechanical pencil.

1) Cube from imagination, no reference.

2) Steeper box from reference.

3) Cube from ref.

4) Needing to do some round shapes, so I stared at my chapstick.

5) Some cones.

6) First attempt at a hand.

Work was a giga stinker so I'm going at the last hour of the full dose.

1) Fast square, not good

2) Less fast square, better.

3) Broke my unmentioned 'no anime until I'm better' rule to draw something I wanted, I liked the pose a lot.

Skimped on the body / anatomy a bit, the right leg was supposed to be back more. That's the most accurate head shape I've ever managed too, far as any style goes.

4) Hastily done tree.

Almost skipped today but 1.5 hr rep is better than no rep.

Is using a straight edge cheating at all?

1, 2, 3) Shapes

4) I didn't plan the space ahead well enough for the tree I was reference. It's a geometree.
