I have a friend whos been drawing for hours everyday over the course of 5 years now and hasnt improved at all. I wanted to get into drawing myself but I'm afraid I'l end up like them. How do I avoid that? Like what are they doing wrong exactly?
>>7922236Don't worry about that because you will definitely be worse, mark down a Google calendar reminder 5 years from now.If you don't, you're a pussy and by conceding, it proves me right. If you do and you didn't get better then that also proves I'm right.
>>7922236You have knowledge of how your friend's art looks, but none of us do, so right off the bat we're at a disadvantage in answering this question in a specific way.But let's set that aside. It's tough to know some people improve rapidly and others don't. I have tons of theories but I really don't know - I only know myself. And I can tell you this: being fearful of making art will cripple you more than anything. If you were going to do it, you'd do it - right now. The proof of who made it and who didn't is only ever obvious in hindsight.
>>7922236Don’t let that fear consume you or you’ll face the opposite fate and end up like me. For over ten years I was obsessed with progress, with getting gud, and honing an original style. Not only did I never get gud but i also didn’t cultivate a practice of drawing from the heart, which gradually sucked out all the soul from my work.
Does anybody here know how to color/shade or know of any youtube channels with good tutorials? Also do you think this is somewhat good enough that I could start looking into accepting commissions? I'm desperate to quit my job.
>>7922331If you find enough work to live off with commissions I'll blow my brains out.

>>7922555Post ref or I'm going to make a study of your study so I can slap an anime maid in front of it
I've been fiddling with this for a few days nowWhat I want out of this painting is it to feel kinda cozy, kinda mysterious and kinda slice-of life-yWhat I'm struggling with is the interior architecture, I don't have any 3d program skills so I'm trying to do this by hand and I keep winding up somewhere around these two thumbnails, And the geometry of the space just isn't very interesting I think.I want the over all space to be cozy but also expansive and I'm struggling to find the balance between them. Also I really want the paintings to be visible, but having them visible means they have to be close up, which means I'm cutting off the view of the rest of the space.
>>7923185ok well try a worm's eye view, that way it captures the scale of the room, the closer paintings are legible, and the girls are the focal point
>>7923130well look who's back

I would have chose a more interesting ref. Then again, I focus more on lines, and my rendering is not at your level, so what do I know?>>7922558I like this one much more than the first one. The colors, the shapes. First one feels too ... clipart? How does coloring your lines sounds to you? Having a gradient from region to region as the lines travel the contour of the body. Or pushing your shadows more? Obviously, I dont know what you were attempting with each piece, but I feel the full body one could be greatly improved with a little more effort.

>>7925842Love it
>>7925654Was your goal to stylize the portrait study or to recreate it accurately? If the latter, I think you might benefit from the envelope method of construction. It's what I use to capture proportions accurately. >>7925313I believe I said so in another thread, but I do enjoy this painting. Very playful rendering that also captures the fluidity of the highlights well.
>>7924785nah, I didn't trace. I just suck at linework
>>7926022>>7926463 meobviously to stylize, I find realism boring, Your pic and the hook are the most boring, to me, pieces in this thread. (not the most disgusting tho, but I wont name those)I still want to be decent at reading a ref well, and recreating it is the best way of learning that. So do tell me about the envelope method, maybe I learn something new, even tho I most likely will not use it. I already have my own method I like, just have to practice it more.

>>7926472If you're not worried about trying to replicate what you see exactly, but instead are trying to capture the "essence" of what it is then I think you are fine just continuing to develop your own methodology. Based off the Breaking Bad study, it does seem like you're employing enveloping to an extent anyway. >>7927243The quadrant method is a good way to get yourself in the door to "seeing things as they are" but I think at your skill level it is hindering rather than advancing these studies of yours. The biggest issue with this methodology is that people often fall into the habit of cramming things to fit within the bounds of each quadrant as they see it, overriding your sense of where things actually are according to the subject. Because you're trying to capture these studies accurately I will also recommend the envelope method to you as well. Ultimately, as you hone in on your style you're going to want to develop a system of constructing characters that is apart from either of these. This video is long, but you only need to watch the first few minutes to understand the gist of what enveloping entails. I've also thrown in a quick mock up of one of the characters to further illustrate the method. https://youtu.be/gwevjSTz2yQ

I feel like i hit a wall in improving could you give me a few pointers in composition, chest, hair and feet. Also I'm kinda tired of brute-forcing my way through learning and I want to learn proper backgrounds, are there any crash courses, what do you suggest?
>>7928185Your anatomy is solid . There’s nothing horribly off about it, but the obliques in particular need work, particularly the one shown the most. It moves more outward, especially for women, and has a bit of a different shape. Hair looks good but study from life to get an understanding of the dynamic elements of hair, it’s a bit static as of now. For backgrounds, just study perspective. Perspective made easy, perspective drawing handbook, and how to draw by Scott Robertson all cover environments and perspective. Once you intuitively begin applying perspective to your art backgrounds will become a piece of cake
>>7924561Thank you (nekos in paris)I was bored at a lecture so i started making shit up.Its a réne twongi :)
>>7927478Thanks, anon. I remember being shown this method once but never picked up the name - now I have something new to study next time I do something like this.I'll admit that I'm only doing this so I can get a feel for how other artists do things. I always feel like my art's really alien, like it doesn't quite look like other people, so I'm trying to figure out how to square it.I just feel like if I knew a little more, and played things a little smarter, I'd be able to make something really great.

Behold! This is the most important drawing I’ve ever created.
>>7925654>>7926472 (me again)damn man. thats a cool video. I am using something similar, that method is better than mine super early on. Thing is, I try to break down the subject into lines which bend and connect when extended around the form of the subject, so I remember those steps and use them when drawing from imagination. While that envelope method looks like it can be used for a good copy of a ref, and it can train visual design, it doesnt do much for imagination drawing because its too abstract case by case. That method of checking your angles moving your pencil in space between your ref and your drawing, WOW. That alone made watching the video well worth it and it helped me make a big break thru for something I am working on right but I am not ready to show yet. Thanks you. Very nice lines btw.>>7926870>>7927264>>7928040>muh style Unironically, and unapologetically, yes. Allowing mistakes into your work is what gives it soul. (dont take pic related as example, another rushed drawing, should have been left for work 1 hour ago, and I didnt even wash or eat by now). A photo, the work of a machine, has more soul than a 100% accurate photo copy. I take back what I said about the hook, its much better than the dogs. I know this is offending to you anon, because its your work, and by extension YOU. But I wont lie and pretend I like it, I find it boring, therefore soulless. The single reason to aim for accuracy is when training (we have machines if you want copies). Mistakes, made upon a good foundation, allow for creating something new. Not everything new is good, but you only need to get lucky a few times and copy those.

>>7930427I can relate with your feelings on this. When I was younger, my problem was not being able to understand the process and creative decision making of artists I aspired to. These concerns resolved over time by just continuing to draw and broadening my knowledge of art. I think you are more proficient and more patient than I was when experiencing these artistic identity issues, so I'm sure you'll grasp what you want in no time. >>7931034I'm happy to hear you were able to take away something from the video! I'm also happy you reevaluated anon's hook study. There are a lot of painterly merits to it that I feel like you weren't appreciating initially. For example, I don't know what brush or layer settings were used to create that color ripple/noise effect on the brush strokes, but it adds a lot of visual interest. >I know this is offending to you anonYou don't have to worry about that, everyone has their own taste. You're also correct in describing my author's voice being low. My discretion laid mostly in the elements of the composition itself. I thought it was appropriate as a more serious memorial piece. When I do draw digitally I usually add more creative input. This one was from about 3 years ago. I'm also currently planning another portrait that will be more fun.
>>7931215I do like the tongue region of this, it looks fun. Now I genuinly appologize for how I treated your first dog work. While I still find it equally boring as before, your politness made me realize you were not the kids trowing the >muh style argument around. Which, while sometimes merited, I felt it was just parroted because I used some trigger words which begs use as a shield to critique. You politness also made me do a quick introspection, and maybe I stil carry some trauma from my chieldhood when only that kind of works were appreciated from me, which made me turn away from drawing for a few good years. Because while they can be fun, they are also tedious and demanding for a chield.Do you have any other works, more imaginary / stylistic / loose ones? You give the impression of a well rounded artist, and not just a human xerox machine, which I took you as initially,>>7931060>>7931182This nigga.
dumping my work from the month of april. I'm especially proud of my value studies.https://files.catbox.moe/0nrc49.png
>>7931270Your value studies are definitely the most strikingFor your more lineart heavy studies, though, it's more obvious that you're not always copying the source image just right. This is fine as long as you capture the same essence, but sometimes you don't. For example, in that Savage Streets study, the characters heads are in noticably different places relevant to their bodies, and the man's forearms are much shorter than they are in the original image. You may benefit from doing more quadrant studies like >>7927243 and >>7927478
>>7931375very insightful critique anon, thank you. I'll give the quadrant studies a try, or at least use a basic grid to help capture shapes and positions more accurately.
>>7931215How do you choose colors? Do you just randomly decide to throw some blues in there?Cool doggo, I wish I knew 1/10 of what you do.
>>7931414NTA but color theory is a good place to start
>>7930453Nah The composition is bad. And I was attempting to make a 1 page story and it spiraled into static when trying to twist the image into narrative. This morning's work sucked too,but at least I have an idea of what direction to go in. Possibly. Maybe a retelling this story, which was done in a Comic Diary that was peddled to Normies, and I welcomed the handicap of filling the predetermined panels with the plot. It was too fast, too sloppy, too illegible for public consumption. Doing it purposefully might be interesting.
>>7931215>so I'm sure you'll grasp what you want in no timeWe can only hopeI feel like I couldn't have drawn this without the practice I did. It's no masterpiece, but it's got a style to it I couldn't have done before.
>>7931566Oh, and nice dog, by the way.I'm no good at painting so I can't give you any rendering advice, but it's got good shaping. and a really nice perspective
>>7931578you have a weird ratio of soft to hard edges. the piece is overall very cohesive, but some of the hard edges are too hard (like his right temple), and some of the forms are somewhat weird (his left temple into his left cheek). excellent colour control though, love it. post the ref?

>>7922236>what are they doing wrong exactlyEither bad executive function (unable to make a good schedule), they watch/read all the tuts but does it "Their way" i.e not applying what they've learned or most likely they didn't take the time to look for critique in the right places with people who are a bit ahead, far ahead and also a bit behind so you can solidify your knowledge by helping out a peer. You don't get anywhere without feedback and you can easily delude yourself of your blindspots.
>>7931238>Do you have any other worksI primarily do portraits/scenes in charcoal and I don't have any good pictures of them. When iScribble went offline about a decade ago so did I. >>7923119nice add bit of shadows and clean up shapes and its cool
I think I officially am graduating myself from /beg/. I’m feeling solid in my expression of forms but I’m having trouble drawing without reference. My work turns out messy and unkempt and I panic trying to achieve proper values, especially when it comes to things like drapery. Any advice on what to practice further?
>>7945354This art looks familiar, what's the artist again
>>7945354Looks to me like you left beg a long time ago, great stuff. I say aside drawing from imagination and memory more, work on darks and line weight. This piece could be a lot more powerful with the proper use of line weight and more dark values . Loomis has a good guide on values and drapery https://drawinghowtodraw.com/2014/04/shade-add-light-complex-forms-shapes-objects-drawing-tutorial/
>>7945449Me. The references are some random AIslop I found on Pinterest
>>7945354this is way past /beg/ lol. that crab bucket isnt very helpful these days. keep ok trucking
>>794535495% of this thread is /beg/The rule doesnt apply anymore
>>7945690>95% of this thread is beg And I guarantee you’re apart of the 95% considering no work is attached
>>7945694I am a part of that 95%, not apart from it.Do I need to link my work to prove I'm beg?
>>7945695LOL no need to do anything because reg is reply is hilarious
>>7945690delusional
>>7945709Please point who isn't beg.Unless you think it's delusional because its closer to 100%(I hope senpai picks my art!)
>>7945301The faces I see
>>7945745take your meds you fucking loonie
>>7945776You proved me wrong. This thread isn't beg art, it's clearly pro
i like draw
>>7945842very well drawn, very soulful
>>7945778there is no need to link you all the posts that are clearly /int/ level and above to a attention seeking retard like you that will devolve into arguing semantics. that'd ve like trying to explain something to a women on the rag
>>7946029Valid analogy, but I think I can link them. I won't for the sake of not causing more drama, which never my intended purpose.I will say that upon further inspection, I think I might be wrong. I counted at least 6 ints and 1 pro, with around 10 begs and a couple borderlines, not counting more than 1 post by the artistSo my initial claim of 95% was way off.
Painted a cyberpunk grim reaper dude. Compositionally, maybe i shouldve removed the two smaller skulls, or just the smallest one not sure.
>>7945354>>7945601You mean /int/. Trust me, when I see pro's sketchbooks, your drawings are on par if not better. I'm not joking. You need to look up some pros sketchbooks on YouTube and you'll see that you're at mid-high /int/. But only you could determine exactly where you are. How long did those figures take? How does your imagination drawings look? What's your end goal? Who do you want to draw like the most of any? Etc. From what I seen, you're at a minimum of mid/high /int/.
>>7946316Here’s something I drew just now without a reference. Those other pics probably took an hour each or so.I’d say I’m far from pro, I’ve only been taking art seriously for about 6 months, but the eventual goal is to live paint at festivals and stuff. I’m very critical of my art but I think I’ve hit the point where I want to actually use it to develop connections and maybe make some money.
>>7946508I tend to draw from immagination for some reason when I dont really like to but it a good way to show what you know and what you dont know. Its one of the hardest things to do.I see what you mean that you arnt /pro/ but your still mid /int/ to me. Even pros can produce "bad" drawings. I would start off by drawing some guidelines and blocking in if you are drawing from immagination. Blocking in or having guidelines (for your persective or browridge placement etc) will help you keep track of everything, you should place a few guidelines down to keep yourself chained to that so it doesnt go "off". Once you do it enough times, you'll naturally start using less guidelines when you draw from immanination. But if you really want to grind out drawing from immaninatikon, after you do a drawing from reference, do the same one from immagination right away. You'll see where you lack knowledge (you should note those parts down) as your brain tries to either bullshit a certian part of the anatomy or you'll try to fix other parts. And since you want to draw live, you'll need the practice. You could limit yourself to 1 hour but the more you do it, the faster you become. You'll also have natural poses you are just good at because thats what you remember the most. As for the issues on that drawing the lips dont really have good form, i feel like the eye on the left is far to the left of the skull and its almost haning out, it should be obstructed more by the nose and moved closer to the right. The ear has no real form and way too small (Ears go from brows to bottom of nose. The area between the eye and the side of the nose doesnt have good form eaither and your scrachy lines could also try to shape the for mbetter instead of being a little less randomy. The teeth are also kinda flat. Oh and now I see that your right eyebrow is way higher than the one on the left too. The nose imo is kinda boring and generic but thats to be expected.
>>7946751You'll notice that some of my crit are just based on invisible lines where things should line up. Those are the guidelines you should always want to remember. If you know the guidelines and the shape you need to make, you can pretty much draw anything.
>>7946751Yeah a huge issue I have is when I go off-reference I tend to really have trouble remembering where to put shading. I’ll have to try doing memory exercises, I’m getting the hang of it but I’ll just kinda have to keep working on things. Ty for giving me a bit of direction, I’ve had some huge breakthroughs recently and now I’m trying to figure out a more precise path towards improvement.
>>7946773Same, I only started 3 years ago but I been making big strides and i see the form and trying to force the figure in persective and see them in space.I been kinda lazy on the practice though lol but yeah im working on it too. Been really meaning to go to trad and pracitce more. Its harder but also I think its better to learn cause of that. Plus it looks better and its more fun anyways.
>>7946508>>7946773pay attention to the ear placement, king
>>7931618that was fun
>>7946773I think simplification would go a long way for you. Focus on simpler, more characteristic shapes and contours . I think it would benefit your style tremendously
Finished for now
How the hell do I get better at painting. Been drawing 7 years. Painting for maybe a month. Still chasing the high of that red hook I somehow nailed
>>7947586if it makes you feel better i think the blue one looks just as good as the red one
My latest, awaiting the polish pass.
>>7947839Yeah but the green one is legit I already took it down and repainting rn lmao.
any tips for how to stay away from over-rendering? i have a hard time getting in the details i want without ruining the overall values
>>7947879Work big to small
>tfw about to do two 9am-to-midnight holiday weekend shifts in a rowI just want to draw :(
>>7947967I work 6am to 6pm, 7 days a week. It's not for ever tho. Probly 2-4 months left on the job. Making 4 grand a week with like 2800 take home
what im doin rn
Bet this uploads upside down.
>>7947586Replaced the old green
>>7947903i appreciate the reminder.
>>7948308Re-Re did it and still looks retarded. Maybe I’m just retarded. No reference other than color reference so whatever
>>7947586>>7949313The key is your shadow shapes that made the red one look so good. look at the inside of the hook, the shadow shape with the highlight in it. Also You really followed the form strictly making the red feel more solid you also did this in the blue as well. The green looks more like a wobbly mess of different shades than anything. It would probably help if you made a list of what you nailed in the red one (If you haven't done so already) and keep it around while you paint the others.
>>7940539You ought to frame it
>>7949321Yeah I was looking more at the red one while painting the green one since I had no reference for the green. The shades of green are more subtle on other examples I have so it’s just really hard. Thanks for the helpful words

Thing i drew irl then edited it on device
>>7949555Finish this. Go for details.
>>7949555I like it so far. Would benefit tremendously from darker darks
>>7947879Like the other anon said, work big to small , and develop a good eye for what is and isn’t finished. Look at work that’s finished and decide how to know when it’s truly done or not
>>7948116You are a freaking legend man. God bless you.
>>7946845Very starry night Esque, nice work
>>7950608Thanks, just got done with this one
>>7950604I wanna give you a quiz to see what stuff of mine you've both read and retained. But let us spare both of us that.: D
Idk if I should be posting this on beg but I put some layers to plan the highlights and shadows but I am struggling to plan them, I want to have the source of light being one from the above like the moon and one behind her since it looks nice but idk also idk if the ground looks ok
kbity
>>7945354I disagree with the previous anon, you're still /int/ but you're on the cusp of being /pro/, nevertheless there's promise to be a master artist
>>7921326fellas i was a mid to high /beg/ and i am wondering how'd i progress?
I had trouble because drawing the eyeliner as I saw it made it look weird on the drawing, I'll be drawing quicker portraits every day with charcoal to get better, rather than "finish" things with color all the time
>>7951440I would say you're pretty much out of beg (progressed!), but your drawing has no depth at the moment, try adding haze in the distance or shadows
>>7947903>>7950600dont suppose you guys know of any teaching material that covers working big to small?
>>7951986...or finishing pieces for that matter.
>>7950880>But let us spare both of us that.LMAO! Yeah lets better do that. I'll admit I rarely take the time to read your stuff but I'm deeply moved by the incredible effort and consistency you put into your stuff. It's almost poetically tragic. Keep casting that trad magic into this world.
>>7951507agreed, I made the silhouettes white and flat compared to the background
Today’s warmup. Trying to pull my values a bit more
is it possible to draw while drunk?
>>7951415very nice render, keep working on it
>>7951808Throw a symmetry plumbline down. I feel our left hand side is much side than the right and the lips aren't in alignment with the philtrum (looks like you did a quick fix and forgot to smooth it out.
>>7951415this is crazy good. blog?
>>7952352Cool
>>7952356Thanks anon
does this come across as unfinished or as having sloppy value structure?
>>7952528I like what's going on there
>>7952550Me too.Definitely worth drawing again.
I was getting frustrated with this:>>7923185and decided to try starting something else a little less mentally taxing.I'm liking it so far
>>7952524It doesn't look entirely finished but your values are fine imo. Some edge variation might push it to the next level, those are pretty same-y across the board.
>>7950210good enough i guess
>>7952586thanks anon. i appreciate the fresh eyes.

>>7952871Blog?
>>7951986>>7952031I mean I’d say just get a good understanding of form, shapes, and perspective. Practice drawing simple forms and rendering them. Just remember that detail is the last thing you should be worrying about when starting a drawing

>>7952946Seen your stuff on here sometimes but didn’t know there was so much depth. How long have you been working on this?
>>7952949On and off for about a decade though during the past few years I've been more focused on it.

>>7955642I was supposed to be working on my comic but I drew this instead
>>7921326Hi guys, I usually post on the /beg/ / /int/ thread, where do I sit?I wanna revisit this painting I made a while ago, I still struggle with pushing my values when coloring drawings in and want to know how I can improve
