It's fucked up that you can't just get good from solely grinding and need to draw a million bullshit drawings too
Someone who only studies and practices will be in a worse spot than someone who never does studies and only draws whatever bullshit they want for fun
>>
It’s not fucked up in the slightest

You CAN improve from grinding though. Grinding shapes, forms, and lines results in your brain memorizing them so when you actually do studies, you can do so with ease. This is why you're also supposed to break down references into shapes and forms BEFORE you eyeball shit. That way when you actually observe a reference, you can recall the shapes and forms that make it up.

If I wanted to draw a simple pine tree, I'd need to be comfortable with drawing triangles and rectangles as well as cones and cylinders. So I would grind those out, then take a reference and break it down, then do some studies.

Someone who only draws "for fun" will actually be in a worse spot. DeviantArt and Twitter are filled with tons of examples of artists who only draw "for fun" and end up with godawful art because of it. Look at Vivziepop. All style with no substance.

If you want to improve, you need to study consistently AND have fun at the same time. It's a tricky balancing act but if you know what you're doing, you can go far.

I would recommend that begs first focus on:

>fundies: line quality, gesture, and composition
>draw from life, draw from photographs, and draw from memory
>copying whatever art you have on hand

If you're not braindead, perspective will develop naturally.

Do this for about a year or two and THEN focus on lighting/shading/rendering and color.

getting good means being familiar with what sucks and avoiding it. Good artists can't just draw anything, they stick to a certain limit for every aspect of the drawing. The only actual objective constant you need to master is line quality. You can fake perspective and anatomy and stick to a discreet list of options.

Sure some people can rotate a body in any angle but they will never draw a body in any angle because drawings need to still be good, and there are many angles that don't look good and thus will not be drawn. Same with colors used, compositions (theres really only a double digit number of good compositions to choose from) etc.

You have to draw shitty things to realize they're shitty and then not fall for it again, its all a big trial and error game.

Autistic grinders that have no direction probably unironically believe Real life skill improvement works like Video game skill improvement. More numbers in, better skill. More years drawing, better drawings.

I don't know what to do with you. I've seen it exclusively online, now I am classmates with one.

I just don't understand how someone can not draw shapes? Like why do you need to practice drawing some geometric lines nigga just do it
>>

Drawing smooth circles and lines is demigod levels of skill without stabilization or tools

It's not mythical. Just draw nothing but continuous overlapping line and shape drawings for two weeks. That's what all the Japanese YouTube art videos recommend.

I swear I can rotate the box in my head I just can't accurately translate it onto the page

Wtf that's literally me

Let me put it to you in the kind of simple language with which the Roman agent talked to the Gauls in Asterix: "You don't do stuff, you don't learn stuff." It's as simple as that. If you want to learn stuff, do stuff, and stop trying to imitate the life habits of a vegetable.
