I just realized that beyond your grotesque themes and taste your shades and shape language seems fairly well developed.
For example, I really like the way you did the folds on her top with just 3 shades of pink.

Thank you! No prob! I just use the opacity, I chose a basic line color and set the opacity at 20% for the clearest tone. And then stack another 20% layer to get a darker tone, and another 20% layer to get another one. So With 4 tones I can do what I need.
Basically, I just use those 4 tones to do the bucket fill, That would be for starters, 2 layers of the line work duplicated. One is the line layer on top, and the bucket filled one at the bottom. Then I add a couple of 20% opacity layers to do a shadow layer (using the line basic color of course) and a lighting layer using just a flat white for things like the shiny hair.
It's an extremely minimal setup to do stuff really quick. The fun part is doing something weird with the pose or the figure's shape. After that I just want to move on, and do other weird shit lol. So I just want to slap some mid tones and leave it at that.

Sorry, now that I think about it I should have drawn something normal for you. I just draw shit without thinking.

Apparently there is a correct way of using rulers. I was struggling because sometimes the pen nib does not touch where the ruler edge touches, so I have to do weird compensation by putting the ruler farther than where the line should go. Turns out, I just need to rotate everything so the pen is always leaning away from the ruler, so the nib can touch more precisely on the edge.

is 1500 x 1500 at 300 dpi too small/low quality for a canvas or does it not matter?
also please critique is appreciated, tried doing a fully painting esque type coloring job with this
>>
DPI is for printing physically. Canvas size on the other hand are the dimensions of the digital canvas, for example 500x500. If you plan to print physically, ideally you would paint on the largest canvas size you can, say 4000x4000 or something. Because you never know how big you might want the physical print to be later. You can always make it smaller later if you need to, but not bigger without obvious upscaling artifacts or blurring if you decide not to use upscale algorithms.

So, high dpi if you plan to print physically, and also high canvas size if you can help it. Otherwise dpi doesn't matter.
>>
>>7952628
>high dpi
*Low. The bigger the print you want, the lower the dpi should be.
>>
>>7952629
That's only if you're going to be standing far away from the print. If people are going to be looking up close, higher dpi is better. 300 is standard for most cases I think.

You can set any dpi you want afterwards, you just need to disable the resampling, which is enabled by default for most programs.
Dpi simply tells how many pixels are printed in a centimeter. 254 dpi means that 100px are 1cm.

>What is the resampling purpose
It's meant to keep the same image dimensions on paper, whenever you make an edit to the dpi.

A good tip is that if you don't make progression in 20 years, you are likely learning "incorrectly". Everyone's brain works differently to make the same connection, so there are other ways to do it that you should try. This is another reason a lot of artists have a shorter time period that they said they started drawing, since they mostly have been drawing since childhood but only started "seriously" within recent years.

Because they're taking their studies seriously then. I would recommend loomis's method like what you have on the bottom right as a starter point!

Additionally, make sure you are drawing for the sake of drawing.
>Just draw.
This tidbit of advice comes from the angle of familiarizing yourself with your drawing utensils and the things you struggle with.
>No matter how much I draw, I can't draw [insert thing] right.
This means you should be grinding that specific thing until you know every aspect of it.

I'm no expert but maybe this'll help!

Try focusing on the shapes of the negative space of the reference as well. A lot of your study here is kind of made up without looking at what you're referencing
>>
>>7952867
Honest question, why is it bad to not 1:1 copy the reference?
>>
>>7952868
I wouldn't say bad per se, but when you're at a beginner level, you don't exactly want to cheat yourself out of most of the ways to train your eye, yeah? If you can't copy 1:1 by eyeballing it, what else are you actually missing when doing other things? If anything it's to train your eye, I'd argue. You'll start to get why certain artists have certain attentions to detail when your eye isn't making stuff up.

Like how some artists are really good at drawing breasts, or feet, or pussy, or anus, etc. They're noticing things that beginners struggle with and are incorporating them into their art.

tl;dr
If you are already kind of clueless at drawing, why sell yourself short with shortcuts if you want to make it?

Have you tried drawing strictly what you like? I have to ask this because it's mostly what I do and it is also what was recommended to me by a friend. I feel like drawing whatever topic you enjoy makes the learning experience much more tolerable (although not painless). I'd also say try to draw for at least 2 hours a day if your job allows, and don't force yourself to draw 100% from imagination. Use references for whatever you aren't sure about.

Everyone learns differently so the most I can tell you is what's working for me.

Nice ref, pretty challenging! I know is fun to always render, even when we are not that good at it (even though if I do the eye squinting thing on your render it actually works quite well), but I still think that rendering is a beg trap that should be avoided if possible. You should draw again this figure 10 times, to reach a finesse in the shapes of it, specially the face. You are almost there,

Are you only drawing boxes and copying things? What about drawing a dog from reference? What about drawing a stick figure in a detailed background of boxes? What about putting the boxes in a specific location and setup that resembles a photo of a room? Just turn all the furniture into boxes.

I understand you're frustrated as fuck but your grinding didn't go to waste. If you're good at boxes, all you need to learn now is how to apply them.
Try copying this guy's stuff.

Well, it's time to start reviewing what you're currently doing and make some changes. First of all, I would recommend copying from the Slayers manga. It's easier to focus on the important landmarks and relevant features that way.
Second, just copy a frontal view of the face. I think you're doing a good job with the width of the face, but this will allow you to focus more on symmetry and facial features.
Third, draw bigger and use the round brush at the smallest size possible. That way, you can build up thicker lines through multiple passes. I think this will make it easier for you to achieve a crisper and clearer result.
I see many good things in your work, but I think you need some guidance. consider joining a drawing or painting class.

>but then distorted the pelvis and ass in such a disgusting manner? I was curious why you do this
I don't know, I guess that I just want to subvert my own expectations, spin the weird roulette and see what comes up. I genuinely feel like if I do a "faithful reproduction" of something that exists in the real world, it is a wasted opportunity of creating something weird and new, or unseen. And provoke some fun and interesting reaction hopefully. I don't want to waste time repeating a new reproduction of something that already exists, and that has been being generated a trillion times over through out history.
I don't have that weight of an ego forcing me to avoid mocking myself at all costs, or the mockery of others, I could die tomorrow and who the fuck cares if I had fun playing with the creation play-doe outside of the "acceptable agreed parameters". I want to push through the invisible wall of this virtual game and see what's in the quantum realm of form and imagination. I want to twist these gesture lines, and shapes and forms and see how they look all fucked up, I want to make those figs cry and scream and beg for mercy... and then twist them some more and see how they look... hee-hee... Do you have a request?

I tried to keep it normal with that scribble on picrel, but is hard. I naturally want to make her look weird and unreal. Sorry

tips for drawing portraits where the hand is interacting with the face or doing something in frame? How do I know what angle its supposed to be at

make your own refs for that stuff
but having a single hand tends to create unbalanced compositions, I try to include both or have another element to balance it out

As a fellow slow-as-molasses drawer: set aside time to do quick sketches with time limits (say 5-10 minutes for a full head or body, if you can't even do 10 minutes then just force yourself until you can do it). Grind the quick sketches until you can do reasonable studies within the time limit. But when doing your original pieces just do whatever's comfortable and only move on if you're spending an inordinate amount of time on one drawing.
