For me it was when they changed the UI/UX to Eclipse. Having to find anything through tags is just horrendous. The old model of searching through categories made it so if I only wanted cartoons instead of animeslop, I could filter out the animeslop. Groups also used to be a lot more active and I remember finding a lot of good art I otherwise wouldn't have through them. Having the "More like this" feature on new deviantART is convenient, but that's about it.

The categories were amazingly useful to narrow things down to specifically what I was interested in, and the fact that search was within the category you were in (which seems like the obvious way for things to work). There's cara.app that went with that idea basically, but the interface is sadly no better, still an endlessly scrolling feed and not well searchable due to tag faggotry.

If you are into a specific fetish, there are people who have old accounts who have been faving the same themed pictures for years. That, at least for me, is one way to get around the shit search.
DA is like...an exercise in "how much worse could it get". The AI slop was the final nail in the coffin...after so many nails. AI slop never should have been allowed on the site. And, lest we forget - it used to be when you saved/downloaded an image, it would save with the image title, by, and the artist name. Which was really fucking handy on imageboards, saved for asking for sauce when you saw an image you liked and simply had to look above it to see the file name. Now most of the time it's some random hash of numbers and letters. If the artist didn't sign their artwork, over time you're liable to forget who even drew it as the file sits on your PC. Another reason why their old file name structure was better.
