It's just a very easy and quick way to create transitions between hard and soft edges meaning once you get good at it, you can render out complex forms with ease but layering and interlocking, erasing, etc. You just visualize the form and trace the form your see in your head, then use a soft brush to to render a plane and so on and so forth.

drawing with your shoulder is cheating.think about it, you have much less control and straight and smooth lines comes out automatically so those lines aren't actually something that you did.
