I've obtained a prescription for (generic) Adderall and wanted to experiment on how it affected learning to draw. I opened this thread to document my progress and for everyone else's observation / amusement.

My goal with this thread is to simply take an Adderall and draw for at least a couple hours a day and post the results. Realistically I may miss some days. The hope is to keep these threads ongoing until I'm either satisfied with the progress documented, or I crash out.

Probable Questions:
>Why?
Whether or not medicating has a significant effects on learning, if it only has a partial effect on some related disciplines that go into drawing, or it arguably had no major effect at all, I want this thread to feed into any discussion as a case example. I also chose /ic/ since I know this board doesn't pull back punches.
>Are you actually diagnosed with ADD / ADHD?
Yes, ADD. I believe inattentive. Been diagnosed since 2003 but never treated long-term.
>How old are you?
31.
>Do you work?
Yes. Full time with a very emotionally draining job.
>Are you on the spectrum?
Undiagnosed but I'm pretty sure. High functioning if so.
>Are you Asian?
No, white.
>What is your drawing experience?
I would doodle as a kid but dropped it in my mid-teens. I took and dropped a starter drawing class in college that was mostly figure studies. Good teacher but I had shit motivation.
>What are your current struggles?
Motivation to draw something that challenges me tends to be few and far between. Taking the medication out of prescribed times also jacked up my sleep schedule.
>Thoughts so far?
The medication does help focus, but it has a volatility where I can hyper-focus on distractions instead. Discipline and taking care of yourself are the two most important things.
>What study materials are you going to use?
Currently doing a sample-platter type stuff and studies. A few books on backlog.
>What are your goals?
To help a friend out with shared projects.

Debating if I just want to render this one anyway to test some stuff out or try something similar all fresh now that I have a better idea,.

this is pretty bold choice of subject to practice for perspective while having mental illness.

Why the fuck did you jump into 2 point perspective of a whole house?

I watched one helpful vid that mentioned I can get the "sunny day" effect leaving the outside completely blank, that was neat to hear.

This looked fun on my phone, then I expanded it and went 'hooooolly shit'. I got half of it laid out and scratched on tonight.

>>7975484
Yeah I tried to do it a faster way instead of being a little more meticulous with having lines aim toward VPs. But my reference also used a lot of uneven crooked stones that roughly fit together, so somehow combining that seems to have some tech I'm not aware of.
I think if I stopped using the reference for the top-most portion and used my brain I could've managed it That or try perfectly rectangle squares.

when you make a picture with a subject and a background try to use 3 to 5 values to separate foreground and background
squint (narrow your eyes so that your eyelashes blur the picture) to visualize the value blocks
I think the monk's head stands out well against the bush in the background but you're too timid about it. that background area is just too crowded and too low against the head, I would make it fill the whole area above the monk's head and make the fairy shine and also illuminate his face.
I know it looks like more work to think about composition but if you block out your imagine right away it becomes much easier to draw and you will also get a better result. at the moment it looks like your pictures are disorganized

when you draw a figure start from the gesture first, I am not sure if you were copying or drawing off your head but the pose doesn't have a good dynamic, especially sexy lady shit needs to have a nice smooth curve. that pose is also tricky with foreshortening and the twist of the shoulders so make studies from something simpler and always use a real 3DPD model in case you're working off drawings.

I'm going to be VERY careful about taking your recommendations from now on (I'll know who you are).

Teasing aside this was a nice one to draw in the 'take my focus off of other things' sort of piece and it looked daunting at first but it was possible to break things down. Gonna cut it short here though.

>>7978537
Heard. I actually hardly considered values so far, so you made me aware that I should prioritize that a bit more. Doesn't feel like 'more' to doing a composition, to me, but an extra thing to consider. Timid is a fair word for it since at times it's me being afraid to mess up a pic, and other times it's just me not considering values whatsoever so far.

What I was trying to do was mix my habit of the lighter pencils I feel like using for sketches, and then I was trying to replicate the color with the darkness of the pencil. Suppose that doesn't work when you put it like that.

The monk piece (I intended a mage, but I still haven't learned hair) I think will be on my redraw list for sure. I think fairies are cute subjects.

As for the sexy lady drawing, that was referencing a drawing that was exaggerated for artistic purposes (sexo), and I fucked up the head as mentioned. I feel I learned a little bit still with the foreshortening regardless.

Anyway, I tried applying the values to this best I could. Thank you (actually) for pointing out the obvious.

>block out your imagine right away it becomes much easier to draw and you will also get a better result. at the moment it looks like your pictures are disorganized
Could you elaborate on this a little more? Thanks for your time.

>That was a really hard image give to you to draw (sorry)
New its cool. I teased a little bit or went "oh dang" the more I looked at it, but it was actually cool to think of how to cut it into parts and practice the "draw the effect" part of the trees I watched a video for.

>Motivation is the hardest shit to find you are doing better than most
I find its easier if I plan ahead of time what I wanna draw too, take a little time to enjoy the idea.
Keeping this up to some extent since Jan 5th is tiring yeah, far from the initial 2 hrs per day planned but at this point I feel like I otta keep the streak up.

Feel free to post as you please, mentioned in the OP people can do whatever. It'll be fun to see how others might approach the precise same thing too.

i took modafinil, not quite the strength of adderall, but I find that stimulant in general, have tendency to make me hyperfocus and obsessing on details, which is not exactly a good thing in art since you'll risk losing the big picture.
When I smoked meth, I ended up jerking off instead of drawing, so there's risk of misguided focus too

Buddy it's been months now. You're well past the phase where a few doodles a day has any benefit. You really need to set a timer for yourself and set a routine for things to practice instead of just drawing whatever comes to mind when you feel it. Start with an hour a day and slowly increase it every couple weeks. You can still draw anything for fun when you have time but make sure practicing fundamentals is at least half of your weekly routine. Even on days you really don't feel like it or didn't take your adderall then just do a 30 min sketch and take it easy knowing that you drew for hours on 4 out of 7 days in the week. I'm sure you don't want to look back on these threads a year from now and see only marginal improvements, if any.

Just some crap. I know how I want this to look in my head but I had only had 3hrs of sleep so I'm on fumes today. Back muscles seized in the middle of the night and woke me up.

>>7984538
Yeah, you're right. I'm definitely not taking care of myself enough to have the energy for this without a break, so I'm at another point of reassessing. Attempts to fit my sleep schedule were short lived, and I need to cut out that dead time.

As mention the goal of two hours a day failed. The couple of things like the tree on a hill for 2hrs and the wizard blowing up the hydra felt nice cuz I sat myself down for those two whole hours.

I found that I'm definitely being shy about trying to go for faces and anatomy too.

Not gonna say I'm near crash out, but if I ever drop this thread I'll probably flip to /beg/.

I'm having fun with these micro details for the trees. Didn't have a timer.

It doesn't feel like I did a lot, these background trees, but I think they're cute.
