Does drawing boxes actually help with your perspective/visualization skills or is it just a meme?
Do experienced artists still find value in doing box exercises from time to time?

It only works if you're drawing cuboid objects from life. Buildings, toys, furniture, books, cars, feet, torsos, etc.

It doesn't really work outside of that. You're better off drawing shapes.

You can make it like one week with it and that's about it then you mentally break down from drawing same shit again and again.

It will suck life out of you.

That's good you can join army instead then.

Yo, is that drawabox. Ok, just ignore all of the other anons here and continue doing drawabox.

Wow, good boxes OP! I am sure you can draw human figures (you know, that thing everyone actually wants to draw) perfectly in perspective now... right?

Boxes are a fundamental structure. For /prebeg/ levels, people that are literally at the starting line, it is a good way to get used to the basic idea. Personally, I don't find much value in it after you internalize the fundamentals of perspective.

It obviously helps but it isn’t the only thing you should be doing to understand perspective. It’s also essential to draw environments and objects from life as well as studying environments in movies, shows, books etc

Boxes are important. Learning them this way is largely a meme.
Drawing boxes like this is a demonstration of your visualization skills and spacial sense. As with most things drawing-related, you're not actually going to learn it through rote copying this or even box-turning exercises. It's no different from people doing still-lifes or copying anime faces.
Drawing boxes is about learning a few rules about perspective, a few properties of the box, developing a quick procedure for yourself to draw the box, and then utilizing it whenever you are sketching. Practical application is all the exercise you need.

What should I do instead

yes

I’ve been drawing a couple boxes every day (like 5 or 6 freehand, nothing serious) and trying to correct them if they look off and I already feel like I’m paying more attention to perspective and vanishing points in my other drawings.
Thanks, boxes.

I've seen box drawing related to grinding low level monsters in RPGs. Your first 100 boars gets you out of the starting area but the same activity will give diminishing returns the higher level you reach until it effectively becomes 0.

You need to understand what makes thing a thing by observing you need to be capable of dissecting everything into basic shapes and then adding details and also understand perspective while you are at it. Drawing boxes will help you nothing if you don't understand how to apply it.
