Instead try to politely and honestly explain the issue you are seeing in detail.

>>
>>7967410
Because people got too butthurt about it when they didn't it into a 16+ picture collage and didn't understand how making an appealing thumbnail means you can't get literally every faggot's post . They also complained about how only the circle jerk horny drawings were picked despite them being the most appealing and vast majority of the others also drawing the same thing but poorly. People even got redlines and advice too and still complained because it was somebody else and not them. Anon made the OP probably to avoid the same retardation. The chads who made the start of that thread genuinely great are probably long gone by now.

you did a nice job with the material rendering, the forms of the body however needs to be defined as they face away from us otherwise it causes this flattening effect. I hate to break it to you but 90% of learning art is purely problem solving and memory. It's only 10% Learnt knowledge.

One of the main reasons of why anime artists are so good is that they practice the things that they LIKE with a lot of consistency and putting in the effort to memorize it.

If you're drawing things that you don't like but practice it with consistentcy and memorizing.

Then it will not be as effective as drawing with things that you like. It can work but is so much more inferior than just normally doing something you like.

You'll be certainly consistent however, you will tend to not remember it fully as it doesn't fully captures your passion and interest.

Those comic strips take 4 hours a page at "full speed". These other "pink scribbles", maybe 45 minutes to 2 hours
> Not sure if I follow you, when you say you have more trouble making a dynamic pose with a smaller sized body
A smaller body type gives me "less material" to work with when doing nsfw, I want poses and situation to be "exuberant" I need "excessive dimensions" to do the things I like
>you can always upload the images to another photo host like Catbox
Yeah I know but my only rule here is that I won't ever use ANY external site. I only trust this site. I don't follow links to other sites. I ain't got the time either. This board is all I need for "fun time". Reaching for more is stepping out of the "fun time" and entering into the "unwanted commitment" territory. I'm too lazy and spoiled for that
> I am assuming based on what you said, you do not
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE detailed stories and situations, problem is, I'll do what I want to do with it lol, and that can be rude if the person expects to see exactly what they described
> How long have you been drawing for, did you take art courses in school?
I've never went to art school, that was a mistake. If you have the talent go to school and build good memories, I was raised to be a cynical person, so I always draw but as a mockery of it. I guess I've "drawing" for "30 years" but again, just in the last 5 years or so I found this little place to draw almost every day for fun. I don't like social platforms, I'm more of a consumer than a creator

Come on buddy, you can't be that purposely naive. Most Americans, don't actually know, in any capacity, what it means to work hard. I'd say about 90% of working class Americans don't. It's why when Ching ling that comes from a culture full of tiger moms demanding hard work of their kids from very young ages gets compared to us, people call it talent because they are literally blind to the reality of a typical chink. They get put to shame real quick though when they're given equal workloads and ching ling manages just fine while the American demands, screams even, about muh money and muh workers rights. If you want the cold hard and brutal truth, most of us are just fucking disgustingly lazy. Sorry. Not sorry. Talent exists, but unfortunately for most of us, that was never part of the equation, most of us just want the rewards without the work. Very typical of faggots that never had to work like their lives depended on it.
>>
>>7967605
Nah most ching lings are just products of being overworked and don't know how to advocate for themselves. However, I do agree, like 110% of people on this board would tap out on their 1st week of working in the industry. I don't think people know how fucking brutal it is if you aren't at some cushy indie studio and while it isn't healthy to go to such extremes, they could all use a little more fire under their bellies rather than dismissing any progress as talent.

i know nothing about painting so this was really all over the place. i remember using 40% opacity a lot. for the blue hues i went as low as 20%. if you have any tutorials or ressources to recommend id be glad to take a look at them.
>>
>>7967618
I only use solid colors to paint lol. I gave up on painting with opacity or any other method. I was just curiously asking. As a sketch it looks fine but idk if you were trying to do just hatching or painting the sides. You could aim for more interesting shapes cause it looks like you are kinda lost a little bit from the stroke economy. So I aim for interesting shapes.
You're probably better off looking at other artists on how they render and studying them desu. That's how I learn. It just depends if you want a soft look or not etc. Dont be afraid to use solid blacks, because blacks make the other colors/values pop out more.
I mean you are already in the top 20% on this board when it comes to panting.

>I don't like how the color overlaps whenever I press harder or softer, or make a new stroke, your shadows don't do that
You got a couple options to avoid it or minimize it. Options for avoiding are to do it on a layer beneath your line work. You can use a multiply layer or paint in the shadows with opaque colors. for the multiply you can do below or above the lines if they're black or the shading is the same color as the line art. You could also make shadow shapes with the lasso tool and then fill them in that way. if you hold shift while the lasso is selected, you can add to your selection. Gives you a lot of control, but a bit difficult to visualize when the shadow shapes aren't there till you fill them in.

As for the minimizing overlap, less strokes help. The reason I had to paint over yours is because I didn't have the lines on a separate layer. So I painted over top and where there was overlap, I painted over it and between your lines. I painted it the way I did the spheres on the left. Painting opaquely and transparently over line art like this really only works in monochrome, so I do recommend painting under the linework if not using a multiply, unless you want something painterly. I added a dot above the spheres and in-between the shadow layer to show what I mean from opaque and transparent. I erased the edges away from the transparency.

>what does that mean. should I pick the same shadow color as the one I used for lineart? or a lighter one, by how much? or maybe I should lower the opacity of the layer?
It just means that the shadow color (that we're adding above the base value) needs to be darker than its respective base value. You should have seen this here in the Marco Bucci video -> https://youtu.be/DQ5QF0q4QqQ?si=8g2XOOsFTcT5gMmV&t=168. The denim is darker than the tank top, so it needs a darker shadow. Same goes for skin that is tanned vs not tanned. Hair is darker than the denim, so it should have a darker shadow.

>>7967628
As for how dark you can go, as dark as you want. You really just need enough contrast so that you can fit other modelling factors. In this case, your light values need to move along your color wheel toward the darkest blue, which is your line art, by about 50-75%.

Keep in mind that before you get good at anything, you get worse.

>in /aco/ the "draw" threads get wrecked by the requests posts, it's really a problem.
Is there any particular reason why you feel this way about that drawthread? They are basically all like that. Drawthread generals, for the time they have been around, have nearly always been heavy with requests. If you post on /aco/ I've not recognized you there.
>Just for this time I'm posting the full image, we're supposed to resize our pics here
I do appreciate that you posted it like that. I had no idea resizing was a rule here. I often feel it has negative effects on the linework quality, depending how it's done.
>These other "pink scribbles", maybe 45 minutes to 2 hours
For what you are able to produce in that time, they look good.
>when doing nsfw, I want poses and situation to be "exuberant" I need "excessive dimensions" to do the things I like
I see. I sort of figured that, based on what I've seen of your works thus far.
>I won't ever use ANY external site. I only trust this site.
Fair. I'm happy you were willing to at least click on the link I provided. I suppose if you end up drawing something anthro where you want to show lewds, you could try /trash/ or /b/, though you seem steadfast on only sticking to a few select boards. Curse that old rule.
>I LOVE detailed stories and situations, problem is, I'll do what I want to do with it lol, and that can be rude if the person expects to see exactly what they described
That can go either way though. Sometimes a detailed idea can be given, and an artist can take it to a place the req anon didn't think possible, and it's a positive. That can be cool.
>I've never went to art school, that was a mistake.
Are you sure? You've done well for someone who I presume was self taught.
>I was raised to be a cynical person, so I always draw but as a mockery of it.
Is this why you post in this thread? You don't seem to think highly of your work, despite showing some very nice body figures and doodles.

>I hope you liked it my underwater scribble it was fun!
I’m glad you enjoyed yourself, thank you for drawing it, and double thank you for your very quick turn around time, willingness to go anthro (I’m guessing cat, or perhaps it’s a mink?) and be closer to a body type I prefer, and posting a good sized .png. Clever file name to boot.
Even before I clicked on it, I could tell from the thumbnail, you had made a quality image.
The background is simple but effective, using vague shapes to show things like the boats. Many subtle details drawn to get across the atmosphere – sunlight rays, bubbles, the thin twistyness of the seaweed, the buoyancy of the hair and tail, etc.. The reflection on the eye mask that gives it a bit of a 3d looking shape is nice, as are the long fins. It’s overall nicely composed and features a lot of characteristics I notice and like.
>I may do a follow up.. he he
I’ll leave that up to you (if do, a full sized png would ideal), but thanks for drawing what you did.
Is there something I can draw for you in return? I’m lower then /beg/, so if you like extra crappy, MS Paint, 1 character standing on a white background, I’m your man.

That other anon is not me, I started at 27, but that was 3 years ago. Before then, I would probably draw maybe once or twice a year and they would just be random meme level edits of existing memes. And I never really drew as a kid besides stickmen sometimes.
At 27 I started being a little more contestant and taking art seriously, and started drawing most of the year, even if there are breaks in between, it would be at least once a month. I tend to stare at better artists work for a long time and watch a lot of art videos during that time so my art knowledge has always been way higher than my skill but now at im the level where I am finally feeling comfortable, and when I struggle, I just go back to the basic art rules to help me guide myself.
Im still pretty lazy at drawing, and take huge breaks, but yeah I could see myself leveling up quite a lot this year if I manage to draw a lot more.
> the solid black thing is interesting, i swear i heard the opposite once, that you should avoid using it
Uhhh I never heard of this, I mean why wouldnt you use the darkest value? It depends on the style of rendering though. But value changes (like you see in vehicles/military stuff) is not uncommon, but they have angular surfaces so it could easily change the value of the side to pretty dark and well we show form with value (at least its easier to show form with it).

thnaks king, this is helpful. you've been very patient with me

I gave this shadows thing another go, it turned out somewhat better. what I did was make two 30% opacity layers above the lineart, one for shadows, one for highlighs and the so-called half-tones. used a hard round with to pressure opacity. while this approach gave me results, I think it only did so because I'm working with a grayscale basically. it'd fall apart if I introduced color into the mix

can't 'feel the form' fully yet, most of the time I went with my gut, so in some parts I might have shadows where there shouldn't be any, some places I might've left lit where it should've been the opposite. I don't like it when I'm forced to 'feel it out'

like, I added a lighter value on the left side of her shirt and left leg, where it should be in shadow, because it seemed to look good, but I don't know why it's there. it's insane how much brainpower one must have to keep all those variables in mind, and I'm only doing the very bacics

Thank you so much for the feed back anon! I made a little story to wrap up that picture for you. As you can see I simplify the figures and designs to the MAX to make it doable. It's the only way to finish a "little" project like this in a day. I prefer the horizontal format of my other comic strips, that's much faster, tho I admit the art gets more crappier. This vertical format takes a little more time.
>Is there any particular reason why you feel this way about that drawthread? They are basically all like that
Yeah I know, I don't post in /aco/ or /co/ I post only here because I like to share stuff with other artists. I understand how the "request" system works in those boards, "draw thread" gets flooded with ref collages requests, in this board though, we need those image slots for original work, artists need the space for their work, that's why "ref collage requests" are not allowed. Your ref was awesome, you putted much effort in it.
> Is this why you post in this thread? You don't seem to think highly of your work, despite showing some very nice body figures and doodles
You may have synthesized in one sentence my whole "artistic mal-functional situation". I don't want to be taken seriously because then I would have to stop doing this fun shitposting. This is fun and self-indulging, if I start doing exclusively pretty stuff and "high-art" then I will have to stop doing this weird shit

Thank you so much for your kind words! You don't have to do nothing for me, actually your lengthy feedback is truly what I really want when I do these pieces. I like to "collect" opinions, thoughts, ideas and fantasies from random anons here, I love that. Best reading material I can have! lol

Because if you teach someone math wrong, they arnt going to discover calculus.
The saying "just draw" is correct, but incomplete, what it really should say is "just draw correctly". And yes, there are fixed rules when it comes to drawing like perspective and values. Its a solved problem. So therefore, there really isnt any "talent" in art. There's the right way, and the wrong way.
>>
>>7967869
I don't think you do it the way I do it lol. There's usually like a 15-20 second part of a song that's my favorite and I will just rewind it over and over. And if my wife is there I'll say "hey listen this is my favorite part" and she rolls her eyes like "oh fuck this motherfucker not again" and I play it a second time for her because I don't think she was really listening the first time.

ANYWAYS. The point is that the impulse distracts me when I'm in a flow state.

Thank you, that's very nice of you. They are simpler drawings, but they are effective in telling the story. I take it you like drawing males with some muscle? That fine touch of the brush change to represent what's above the water and what's viewed below it is a nice detail.
>that's why "ref collage requests" are not allowed. Your ref was awesome, you putted much effort in it.
I see. I did have the foresight to link it beforehand, but it still was an issue, even past the bump limit (whether those above saw it naturally or it was pointed out to them, who knows). I try my best with good refs to not waste the artists time too much, to make the idea clear to save them some of the hassle of searching for refs. Some, like you, like the presentation, as it helps get the idea across. Others do not like it because it's like hitting a wall of autism (and that's fair, everyone is different).
>if I start doing exclusively pretty stuff and "high-art" then I will have to stop doing this weird shit
I will assume pretty stuff/high art reads as "art for the masses", basically stuff that is more acceptable on a wider scale, vs stuff that you share in these threads.
>You don't have to do nothing for me, actually your lengthy feedback is truly what I really want when I do these pieces. I like to "collect" opinions, thoughts, ideas and fantasies from random anons here, I love that. Best reading material I can have! lol
I'm glad I could scratch that itch in that particular fashion. I tend to give wordy feedback as it often feels disingenuous to throw out just a "thanks" when I know it takes a fair bit of time for an artist to draw something. Least I could do for the time they put into it, especially if they checked off certain boxes regarding thing I like.

idk what your art looks like or what you think "mid beg" is, but mid beg is not "decent".
Non-artists thinking your work is decent is basically the definition of /int/ (decent in the sense of "hey I like that" rather than "decent for someone who's learning how to draw I guess")

Yes, studying anatomy will help you. You need to know where to place the body parts and how they move relative to each other. For example, do you see the subtle bend of the wrists in the right picture? You need to know what kind of movement the wrist makes in relation to the forearm and hand.
>>
>>7968085
so i understand how basic-level anatomy knowledge would help, but when i look at anatomy courses they go into detail about all of the muscles over the entire body and i dont really get how learning 90% of it makes sense when it barely applies to anything that isnt realism or semi-realism

anatomy will help you understand why wada makes these choices, they are not arbitrary
and most (artistic) anatomy courses deal only with surface anatomy
>>
Learning anatomy would probably help you immensely. That said, a lot of people who learn to draw the kinds of anime girl pictures you posted seem to have not studied anatomy at all. Some of them even try to sell courses on Udemy, and if you check them out there's no description of fundamentals, it seems they just know the shapes intuitively from brute-force practice and repetition and they can't quite explain how they drew what they drew. Then you look at the comments and all the people who paid for the course are complaining that the teacher didn't explain enough. Literally the "now draw the rest of the owl" joke.

Generally though, studying anatomy would probably be the better choice. But a lot of these people didn't do that, and sometimes it shows but people seem to not care if it's rendered well.

Think of it this way. You probably learned all the grammar and punctuation rules but about 90% of it does not apply. However, you still know these rules so that you can pull them out of your head when you need to express something in a certain way. I don’t know what your aspirations are but if you want to be a professional artist, you don’t always get to choose what type of work you want. So it is good to be well-equipped with all the anatomy so you can take on the work.

IDK if you've done it, but would Tenten help? i was doing his course for the first couple of weeks but then I got to the face lessons and it felt like basically all of it aside from the base facial structure was useless since i have zero interest in drawing semi-realism

im not sure if maybe i should just ignore the facial features part of the course and just focus solely on the body-anatomy

Studying anatomy might make you hate this art actually. But it is worth it, yes. Then studying color theory since it doesn't seem like this artist is terribly nuanced about edges, so...
Yeah that seems about it.
>learn anatomy
>learn color theory
>bullshit everything else
This is how I would've drawn the anatomy of the pic (not much different). The more you learn about anatomy, the more "westernized" your art might look, especially if you start becoming obsessed with specific parts of the human anatomy (if that makes sense). For instance, someone might be obsessed with collarbones and start making anime girls with very weirdly bibly accurate collarbones, or god forbid the foot is a very horrible pit to fall down. Surface-level anatomy is how most people function that draw like this though. ymmv, like most advice.

>I think it only did so because...
Trust me when I say this, you can really only begin to understand colour once you've gotten a grip on your grayscale/monochrome paintings. Your completely right about feeling as though it would fall apart if you introduced colour. Values are the foundation beneath colours and below values are shapes. If your shapes suck ass, values don't matter because nobody knows what you're trying to draw. If your value suck ass, colours won't save a painting and actively harm it. Don't worry too much about it, you're doing good.

>I added a lighter value on the left side of her shirt and left leg...
Yeah, it really easy to move too fast when learning shading. Although, those decisions will make sense the more you study modeling factors. I wouldn't worry about anything beyond just placing the terminator and filling in the shadow with a simple multiply layer until you feel comfortable or have confidence in placing. Feeling the form doesn't really matter here that much. What matters here is the logic of whether the light is hitting the plane or not. It's very binary in this sense, either it's lit or it's not. The reason I stress the terminator is because it is the foundation for all the modeling factors to be built on. After you get the terminator down, only add 1 more modeling factor to the drawing. Until you get a good grasp or understand why it occurs, move onto the next only then. It's like progressive overload for exercising, move along too fast and you will plateau because the muscles and tendons can't adapt at that rate. Needless to say, the more you know in a variety of fundamentals, the more you'll see how they relate to each other.

Pic related is mostly just here to highlight how even with the most simple elements of form light, form shadow, and cast shadow in place, the overall impression of the image is set. Adding colour is stone throw away from there.

Anyway, glad I helped.

Also what program do you use? Krita? CSP? Most drawing programs have clipping mask. If you don't know about them, look into them. They make some things easier. Although they can get in the way of when you want to draw directly. If your using CSP, reference layers are pretty neat too, although I don't use them. Effectively the "clipped" or "masked" layer(s) will only be visible based on the shape of the layer below it or the stack. You might already be doing this, but if not, you might find a use for this.

You're wasting your time drawing these fucking boxes. It's like you're exercising your legs and wondering why your arms aren't getting any stronger.
>I fail when I try
Fail WHAT
>>
It isn't that """talent""" is what's needed to draw better. No.
It's the thirst for fucking learning and WANTING to get better. If you're not interested in taking shit apart, what is the point of learning a new hobby?? If you're not looking forwards to improving, what the fuck are you even doing? Expecting this hobby to just feed you dopamine because you're doing it??
This is why artists were shit like grave robbers and inventors back in the day; they wanted to learn more. They were addicted to seeing how things work in order to replicate them on whatever medium of choice they had. That's why when a pack of artists are friends, they all have the same art style. It's because they're exchanging information and tutorials, not drawing boxes and the same exact god damn hat kid over and over again. They're trying new stuff because failing isn't fucking scary due to knowing that eventually you'll get it if you suck down enough tutorials.

Come on guys. THINK when you draw. Even if it's a little bit.

>hair and clothing folds are a real pain
>really feels like I need to learn folds before anatomy
>copying from a photo was more interesting than anime
>couldn't draw for more than 1 hour, today I want to draw at least 2 hours.
I still have fun. But I was really demotivated after googling what people drew when they were starting. I'm just 2-3 times worse.
Also what's with some Youtube videos saying that the best way of learning is drawing what you want. How the fuck am I supposed to do it if I can't draw?
>>
>>7968279
Because drawing things you actually like keeps you engaged. If you're into huge titties, learning how to draw shapes resembling tits will motivate you more than drawing anal sex between two anorexic men.

>>7968277
>due to knowing that eventually you'll get it
2500+ hours of drawing over 6 years. I got nothing for that time, unlike those with talent.
>>
>>7968295
>"drawing"
Better not be the box guy there.

When you look at your drawing, I guarantee you can at least point to one part of the picture and go
>This part sucks.
Sure, the whole thing sucks. But you CAN point to one thing and say it sucks. So do that. Point to something that sucks. And then go and draw a LOT MORE of that thing that sucks. Suck more. Suck harder. Just stop drawing the fucking boxes and cylinders. If you do improve, it's only going to be at that.

Proof that talent isn't needed is the fact that you can walk, read, type, and fucking feed yourself. These are all things you learned to do. Unless you can't, in which case you are beyond help sadly and I am sorry to hear that.
>>
>>7968279
Drawing is hard and it takes a lot of practice to get good at it. So keeping it enjoyable by drawing the things you want to draw (even when you suck) is important to keep you motivated in the long term. Set a clear goal and work towards that. Ignore stuff that doesn't help you reach that goal. You learn to draw anime girls by drawing anime girls, don't fall in the the trap of only studying fundamentals.
Otherwise you end up like this guy >>7968295 2500+ hours of 'drawing' fundamental studies with nothing to show for it.

Anatomy mistakes are like the number one thing that makes an otherwise good anime drawing look like shit. You don't need to memorize every muscle, but studying it extensively will make your work so much better. Plus understanding the different forms in the musculature will make the image look so much more aesthetic. Like the subtle flow in your lines will improve dramatically because you subconsciously understand the muscle bellies and how they deform

Construction doesnt necessarily have to be about boxes, cylinders and balls. Think of it as working out a draft floorplan with exact proportions/orientation.

An easy example would be the negative space between the linked picture's roght breast and upper arm/upper thigh. If you focus on it, it's more akin yo a triangle pointing to the right from your view. On yours, its more of a rectangle that has a bended side on the top.
To better get a sense of what construction is, think of it more as "scaffolding" rather than specifically just "forms" as it includes things like measuring proportions with lines and whatnot.
>>
>>7968504
what you describe is what a 'block-in' stage is
it's primarily a 2d process, to get general proportions and placements right
construction is about a 3d process, where you build/modify/carve 3d forms (they can be simple like boxes, or complex like a ribcage)
both are useful

I really like your line and figure language. I don't agree with this anon >>7968500
>you rely too much on intuition
I think relying in your intuition is the key to unlock the appeal you seek to achieve, of course that needs to be paired with consistency at all costs. You will be correcting course along the way by doing these pretty figs every day as you are doing. I really like your ref taste, you will be okay you definitely "have it", if "I" can give and advice it would be not to fall for the render trap, you should keep doing these rough figs non-stop, till they look so good you don't even need rendering. And THEN get into rendering full-on.

It's an early low poly 3D CGI style used in the 2000s, it was elegant and effective for Games, and it was used a lot by indie 3D games specially "ero" like picrel. Also in many animes in the 2000s. It has that "glow" effect that was very common in the PS2 - Dreamcast - XBOX graphics. It was the beginning of the "liminal" style of the 2000s usually paired with jungle rhythm and bass:

Listen. You're in the /beg/ thread, upset that non-/beg/s are fishing for attention. Anyone who says they've only been drawing for under a year that "mogs" you has clearly been "doodling" for longer than you've been doodling. It's why we say "just draw". They can improve faster doing studies because they're not just now starting on doing something other than writing illegible chicken scratch. Doodling gets you familiar with lines work and flow. Most of the better artists in this thread likely have been drawing "unseriously" since grade school or its equivalent.

Cute work! The tree is on a different plane than the ground. Judging by the style, you're referencing isometric game art, so to keep it simple, I would change the ground to an isometric grid. You should try PixiEditor with this style, you can do a lot of fun things by animating something like this.

So the second starred one;
You'll be needing to pushe the head closer to the center of the torso and look out for the negative space shapes. It's a triangle, yes, but...

The first starred one is such a nightmare of a pose I can't tell what's going on. I think that's a great way to learn which poses are "good" or "bad" - they're whatever you can actually capture to the eye at first glance maybe? Hm. I just don't personally like it haha.. Your head looks like she's facing away rather than us looking at the bottom of her chin. I'd recommend a different way to draw heads, but only for readability.

I've included some snippets from Sinix and Sugar Owl's way of depicting heads in a less-refined manner. Sinix uses that weird paper method for the face and Sugar Owl depicts the cranium since it's easier to connect to the neck

Hope this helps.

Thanks anon. For the first star, did you mean the pose itself was a nightmare or my interpretation was the nightmare?
>Your head looks like she's facing away rather than us looking at the bottom of her chin
I noticed that too and I tried making the neck and chinline more prominent, but it did still look like she's bending forwards instead of backwards. I knew it was a tough angle but I wanted to try getting out my comfort zone so I tried it anyways.

Hat kid fag not understanding what a sketch even entails is actually a lot more common around here than people think. It's endemic among copy studiers like in /asg/. Sketching is fundamentally completely different from copying. Someone who has become skilled at copying has a rude awakening in store for them when they try to find a workflow where they attempt to develop a drawing from scratch.
