how do you avoid loosing your soul?
>>
>>7968848
2022
>hmm i think im getting the hang of this drawing stuff
2023
>why people dming me if i want to work in their companies lol
2026
>drawing sucks ass wtf am i doing with my life
>>
>>7968848
You have to keep drawing influences from artists you like. "Losing soul" is the direct consequence of not doing this in favor of focusing too much on rendering or realism.

Regression happens when you skimp out on fundamentals and get lazy. Stagnation happens when you refuse to copy or pull from anything more outside of what you've already learned.
>>
by remembering that the fundies ur learning are just tools not the rule
>>
>>7968848
The pose became much less dynamic and interesting in favour of rendering, 3’s rendering with 2’s pose would be the best combination. Also forms are more expressive and exaggerated in 2 which can help with “soul.” 1 is a good start but its symbol drawn and amateur.
>>
>>7968848
losing the "soul" usually happens when you overcorrect your sketches which some /int/ tend to do since they learn enough stuff to know what's "objectively / anatomically" correct but don't have the experience to know when to forego it in favor of a more dynamic drawing

my advice would be (on top of learning gestures + pulling more diverse input & inspirations yada yada yada) to sometimes let the sketches be as it is, that's usually where the most natural (aka what you'd call "Soulful") lines happens and of course you will want to correct glaring issues in your sketches, but just keep in mind the more you correct the more "soul" you are chipping away from them

There's definitely a lot of good progress between 2023 and 2026. Just look at the shoes. Notice of 2023's vague indication of a vamp is replaced in 2026 with a fully drawn show tip, midsole, tongue, and heel, with more mechanical detail on the surface as well. Everything else such as her hair, hands, and clothing better reflect her robot character design. Lines are cleaner and the saturation in the skin gives her some life. I think the pose in 2023 is more interesting, but overall 2026 is much better.
>>

Which illustrates that the dynamic pose is more important than mechanical details, clean lines and realistic skin rendering.
Cartoonists have know this for a century.
Don't forget the most important fundamentals when you learn the fancy extra stuff.
>>
Are these threads just cope for /begs/ who can draw nowhere near as good as the original artist so they find this new angle of cope by saying "they lost soul".

maybe you should just do shit garbage on purpose so you can learn how it feels to fuck it up instead of being such a faggot constantly avoiding it.
>>

Having a good eye and always being critical of yourself.
>>
>>7968848
i see many artists who lose sight of what drawings they wanted to make to begin with and then they quit after reaching a certain level of slopification
>>
>>7968848
By not improving
>>
>>7968848
I actually know the reason but I am not sharing it lol. Its a lot simpler than you think.
>>
>>7968848
2023 pose is the most gestural one
>>
>>7968848
live a fulfilling happy life full of friends, family, and experiences.
>>
shit like this is why I hate the soul meme
>>
>>7968848
Stop using blue/purple in your shadows
Stop flipping your canvas
Forget optimizing your workflow and just draw
>>
>>7968848
2026 has the most SOVL unironically
The well-drawn smile and the eyes show a better emotion.
The pose is less dynamic than 2023, sure, but it conveys a casual pose.
For example, you can use 2023 poses in a pinup poster/character selection/photoshoot. While you can use 2026 one in the middle of the comic/animation to tell a story, where she is lazily looking and listening to another character
>>
>>7968848
Apparently by never improving your art skills.

Also
Reminder that "soul" is just a meme word used by ignorant people that can't explain eloquently enough why they like a certain thing.
>>
>>7968848
2026 is just rendered, the stark colors on the leftmost are more appealing but all he has to do is remove the shadows and make the black parts all solid black and it's the same. Also, he made the proportions more generic so it looks like a different character- making her skinny again would fix that, specifically her calves, skirt/hips, and puff sleeves. The pose is fine in all of them. Clear improvement in all 3
>>
>>7968848
maybe don't draw the same thing over and over again until all joy of life seeped out of your gay terminally online soul
>>
>>7968848
23 and 26 are the same drawing. The artist just got a more expensive graphic tablet and learned what a highlight is. The image resolution increased but the drawing ability is stagnant
>>
>>7968848
All of them look the same.
>>
>>7969081
It's obviously a real concept. Other people failing to recognize it or misapplying the concept doesn't change that fact
>>
>>7968848
soul is lost from being too proper and precise.
>>
>>7968848
the 2022 version is my favourite by far
>>
>>7968848
You CAN'T, this is well known. The more you learn the rules the more your true self dilutes. Everyone thinks picasso couldn't draw for shit but in fact he was a fucking pro since young age, pic related is picasso at age 14, he mastered realism and he had to unlearn and unfuck his brain to recover his soul from the depths of technique
>>
>>7968848
The first one looks punk rock, you can feel the aggression, the raw authenticity, colors are simple and bold, there's a ton of contrast, posture is unapologetic, strokes feel free , they go where ever the fuck they want unlike the other that are rigid with a straight direction, the anatomy of the face and the expression looks like someone that is actually there, existing, being. The other two have the faces of dolls, perfectly symmetrical like something that came out of a casting mold, disgusting. I can only see the the indomitable human spirit vs a crafted product made with the intention of being liked.
>>
>>7968848
weird somehow the 2026 version looks the most soulful to me, i'm a bitch for good forms in drawings and i'm not a big fan of pitch blacks for dark areas in drawings. I wonder if "soul" is just another word for appeal
>>
>>7969081
Soul pretty much shows how much you care about the results.
It doesn't even have to be technically great, you just have to CARE and do your best even if the results are subpar.
Which is why lots of beginner doodles are soulful, beginners don't know how to draw but they care. An int is definitely much better technically but after drawing gozzillions of shit drawings you kind of stop caring about singular pieces, it's just the process.
>>
>>7968848
By losing it again.
Learn it all, then forget it all.
>>
Technique is not the goal. Technique is in service to expression.

You might forget that while youre learning technique, but dont forget why you started in the first place.

you have to be a bit wonky. the focus is on capturing charm and appeal, not precision no one actually cares about.

Its about PASSION, and OBSESSION. you draw what you LOVE.

>>7969750
>hyper rendered space marine
I dont have the image, but that meme dunked so hard on "muh realism" fags.
>>
>>7969450
You mean like how this board does 90% of the time as a way to shit on art that's good but they no likey so they have to crab out?
>>
>Left
Obscure 90s Japanese passion project, OVA made by industry legends working under aliases, shit's prolly something about killing god, identity and the self, people will over analyze it for the decades to come.
>The other 2
Chinese gacha bs coom characters. Most likely a fiverr commission made by a pajeet for $15 bux and a plate of kung pao chicken.
>>
>>7968848
All of these look good and non-generic.

They used to had fun drawing even if they weren't good then they learned to draw and forgot to have fun, many such cases.
