Which exercises would you recommend to help with improving the feeling of the form? Knowing the principles is one thing, but actually drawing is another, what worked for you?
If you are talking about getting proportions right, then one of the most important things to keep in mind is to mirror your drawings, so you can spot the mistakes better.
>>7968877Draw objects from real life. Fill 1 sketchbook per week. Use Keys to Drawing’s questions for self-assessment.
>>7968877
>>7968877draw from lifeconsider scultping (or 3d and that's only if you have no other option ("i dont want to get messy" is not an excuse))
>>7968877>>7965836
>>7968905>>7968907Drawing from life is overrated as fuck. It's basically the same as using photo reference, except you also have to work around annoying fish eye perspective.
>>7969008Yeah I think the “draw from life” meme is unironically just boomers being biased against computer monitors for whatever reason.Plus “draw from life” implicitly excludes the work of other artists, and studying other artists is where all your real improvement comes from anyway.
>>7968877Draw body parts
>>7968877>Knowing the principles is one thing, but actually drawing is anotherKnowing the principles is what worked for me. I know this is exactly the answer you don't want to hear.Far be it from me to criticize the great Vilppu, but "feeling the form" is akin to predicting the path of a drop of water on a shape. It makes no sense to try to divine the intent of the water. It has no intent. You predict the path by knowing the form underneath. In the end, it's all about knowing the properties of shapes and forms, how cross contours and midlines are really just "inbetweens" of opposing contours, how light and shadow are like a knife that slices the object, and so on. You get good at it by using that knowledge constantly and consistently. There are only a few rules pertinent to freehand drawing, and when it comes to drawing human forms, you can relax a bit. Organic forms are actually a lot more forgiving than the perfect geometry of man-made objects.
I'm a nsfw artist and drawing cum will teach you exactly that.
>>7969012Yeah, I mean it's good for really understanding the form of whatever you draw, because you can view it from any angle you want and you can also touch it. The colors are also more correct since most cameras don't even show the true colors of something. But still, most of the time people don't even have the possibility to draw from life the subjects they really want to draw, so all of that doesn't really matter anyway. It's more an opportunitistic thing or if you want to become an impressionist.
>>7969008For me, the reason I dislike drawing from life is that there's nothing interesting in my life to draw. I would be fine if I had a live drawing class near me, or interesting props, or a proper setup to create my own still lives. I believe practice should be fun, but it's unfortunate to think about what i'm losing out on by not drawing from life.
>>7969090I don't think you will miss out on much by not drawing from life. If you really want to try it, you could buy some figure of whatever you want to draw. For me, an annoying factor about it is also that you always have to look up for the reference when drawing from life. With photos you can print them out and put them right next to your drawing paper or just import them into your drawing program. It's much more convenient.
>>7969099alright look I KNOW it's gay or whatever to say "PYW" on this board but I am really curious to see what your work looks like because that'll help me a lot. I'll be fair and post my work first, here are some one minute poses I did today, giving brent eviston's figure drawing course a try
>>7968877Feeling the form requires doing lots of blind contours, silhouette sketching, and breaking down your subject into forms and shapes.
>>7969288Why does this matter in this context? If you want to draw from life more, then do it. Nobody is stopping you. Just don't expect it to be some magical cheat exercise where you get better faster than with other ways.
To get proportions right, you must first learn to draw somewhat clean and precise, otherwise you can't hit the proportions correctly, even if you see them. You hand-eye coordination must be decent.
>>7969300because if you're saying you're not missing out on much, I want to see what your drawings look like, assuming you don't draw from life either so I can know if that's true or not.
>>7969300Because we know youre full of shit lol. You dont pyw because it sucks. Drawing from life is too difficult for you and you're trying to rationalize it to yourself because everyone on this board is some weird super-narcissistic delusional liar. These threads are your chance to larp as some sort of wise art teacher to massage your starving ego
>>7968877I've been doing these perspective exercises so I can get used to drawing anything from any angle. Dissecting complex forms into simple shapes, mapping them out onto orthogonal drawings, then translating those drawings into another drawing in perspective.
>>7969307I draw loli art and don't want to get banned for posting outside of my containment general.
>>7969312Where did you get this from? I think I might have an idea
>>7969324How convenient.
>>7969331It's my drawing. If you look through Proko's videos on perspective from Marshall Vandruff he shows you how to do it.
>>7969332Your reasoning doesn't make any sense anyway.Artists always have their own approaches. For some people drawing from life may be a great way to improve. Maybe they jsut enjoy it so much, that they get better with it. For others it may be completely irrelevant. Not every good process fits to everyone. You have to ind your own way.
>>7969345>Your reasoning doesn't make any sense anyway. No I made plenty of sense that wasn't even owed. Your defensiveness over posting your art on the board is what doesn't make sense. You really have only ever drawn loli hentai so you can't post anything? Am I really expected to believe that? Please. There's no way to tell you aren't talking out of your ass as a "/nodraw/" as >>7969309 pointed out.And I was already suspicious when you said "You always have to look up" If you had experience in the matter, you'd understand that you can set up still lives to where you don't have to look up. You can even set it up where you can glance without moving your head. Even I know something so basic. So if you don't, what do you know?
>>7969345Drawing from life is the best way to improve at drawing. It’s really not a debate.
>>7969309>>7969366You got me.
>>7969372I hope one day you draw a lot and you can back up what you're saying. We still love you
