Whenever I go to this board. I see Loomis, Vilppu, Hampton, and Bridgman. But rarely Hogarth. Is Hogarth really that underwhelming compared to the other anatomy/figure drawing artists?
>>7970351He's too advanced for most of us. His rendering scares away the /beg/s. If you wanna draw dynamic figures like he did for the Tarzan comics then he's pretty good.
>>7970351His anatomy just looks so weird that it puts people off
>>7970351extremely good. the fact that the anatomy is exaggerated makes it so understandable. how you gonna understand the biceps if its as flat as the rest of the arm? you wont.
>>7970351I get the feeling that Hogarth's Book is essentially the same as Bridgman's, and that the lessons are mostly the same, and that's to learn musculature through exaggerated figures; it's just that Hogarth's drawings are all bulky lumpy bald men, while Bridgman tends to be more diverse while also far more stylised.I also read someone complain about the amount of reading in Hogarth's book in the last thread about him, and ordinarily I'd completely discard such opinions, it does seem that half the book is about the history of art, and understandably if you're reading the book to learn to draw, reading over a hundred pages on art history might be fairly aggravating.Meanwhile, you dive right into drawing with Bridgman. So to your point - Hogarth's Books may be great, but they're seemingly a lot more impenetrable than a lot of other comparable books.Add to this that some professional artists seem to look down on this book, I can see why it's become overlooked. All that said, if you've down any research into drawing materials, you would have heard of his books, so it's not like his work is obscure, just often overlooked in favour of other more accessible books.
>>7970351Most people on this board are interested in anime, which doesn’t necessarily require such advanced and intensely stylized figure drawing. He’s a good resource but not strictly necessary for a lot of people here
His examples look like Baki characters (read: disgusting)
>>7970351hogarth seems good but bridgman mogs him in every sense of the word
>>7970351I'm convinced that his books aren't that good, but his lectures were probably incredible 10/10. Most people recommending his books likely haven't read them; they probably experienced his live lectures instead.
>>7970398you mean awesome actually
>>7970398lmfao. good comparison. hogarth's figures are really just that, polarizing
>>7970492Bridgman looks unappealing though, I prefer Hogarth instead.
>>7970351Stiff rigid poses with the most unappealing style of anatomy I have ever seen. Why the fuck should I learn from this retard when I can draw better than him?
>>7970398I kinda like Hogarth, but dislike Baki
>>7970351I tried studying hogarth and morpho at different times, but I realized half way through that I think all of their figures are ugly and make me want to barf so I stopped. It was a good lesson for me. Now I only draw stuff I think looks good so I don't accidentally absorb ugly nigger art.
>>7970371>the fact that the anatomy is exaggerated makes it so understandableInteresting. I never saw it this way.
>>7970839>Now I only draw stuff I think looks good so I don't accidentally absorb ugly nigger art.I think this is an important lesson that so many ignore. I will judge a drawing book entirely on their cover, and I feel no shame.
>>7970839I'm going through morpho right now and only copy drawings that aren't ugly, faces are completely busted for example but certain parts like arms and legs are alright. Just cherrypick whatever suits your agenda
>>7970351its not a beg book and most of /ic/ are perma beg no draws so they dont know how to use the book as a tool,
>>7970351his anatomy is very stylized but early in his tarzan career he aped Hal Foster so well that even foster claimed couldnt tell the difference. Dynamic figure drawing is absolutely filled withe useful information for figure invention
>>7970351People don't want something that's exaggerated to illustrate a point which they have to reinterpret into their own work. They want a 123 guide to teach them exactly what to do
>>7971756They need to 1. lie down and 2. stay quiet as I 3. kick them in the head.
>>79717561. Look up Bridgeman2. Copy Bridgeman3. Repeat
