Hi everyone. I can't render or shade for shit. And everytime I look into how I would learn it seems I gotta learn like 10 things first (occlusion lighting, negative space, colour theory, bounce back lights, Yada Yada).

If I could study I wouldn't have dropped out of college. Are there any speedpaints by any artists that simply break down how they approach progressing a piece after the line work is done? If you got any links, I'd be super appreciative

Yes but also no. Yes in the sense that having knowledge of all these things isn't bad. No as in your practice is going to incorporate every element. If your shading is shit, you're going to get lost and confused by doing that. You need to take it one step at a time.

Speedpaints can help you, if you slow them down and pay attention. I do it all the time with Aleriia_v speedpaints. Gotta really zoom-in sometimes to see how she manages her layers. Lines sensei has draw along videos you could probably follow.

Marco Bucci has a video that'll be of use to you in the link. If you want to get good at shading you need to follow the procedure shown in this video. You shouldn't move onto the next stage/step until you have a good grip with the one you're on. A lot of your paintings should look like step one and stop there. Where the shadow shapes are merged into 1 and so are the light shapes. Until you get good at that first step, I wouldn't bother with adding that middle/half tone let alone manipulating edges.

This channel has a whole bunch of just speedpaints.

A good amount of the drawings/paintings you make shouldn't go beyond just separating light and shadow for now. Doing them in grayscale will eliminate a lot of confusion too.

anything related to rendering a sphere (value, hue, saturation) is done really fast by a professional

what i have seen them spend a lot of time on is perspective/composition, filling out space and shapes/detail

btw i am not linking shit, matter of fact keep watching speedpaints, employers will totes be happy to pay you a week of salary for 3 hours of work lmao
