I don't think it's ai, it's consistently mediocre. The old one was soulful at least, it had emotions. The redraw is like those videogame and movie remakes that miss the point of the originals.

His old art is obviously better, but I think that's partly because he put less effort into this new version. For example, he couldn't even be bothered to draw the lines on the skirt.

The old image also has much better colors. It's more vibrant, while the new one looks dull and washed out. The positioning of the lovers is worse too, they're farther apart, which makes the scene feel less like they're actually kissing.

There are also several details that make the composition weaker. The ribbon doesn't flow in the same direction as the cherry blossom petals, which makes the wind effect feel inconsistent. The cherry blossoms themselves also look uglier and more worn out compared to the original.

The girl's expression is another downgrade. In the old version, she clearly looks like she's crying. In the new one, the tears are so transparent that it almost looks like she's sweating. Her head is also raised higher, and her shoulders are in a more relaxed position instead of being lifted, which makes her appear much less sad.

The guy also looks strange in the new version, almost as if he has no neck. The girl's waist looks oddly wide as well, making her proportions feel off.

The letter is another problem. It barely looks like a letter anymore, and because it's smaller, it isn't as visually important. In the original, your eyes first go to the girl and then to the letter, helping you understand why she's crying. In the new version, the focus is mainly on the couple, making the image feel less emotionally impactful.

The rendering quality may have improved, but if the artwork can't convey the same emotion as the original, I don't think that's much of a victory.
