>>

This will sound mega autistic but I could never get over how inflexible this style is. The last straw was Zootopia with horses walking upright and they had hooves for hands. How the fuck do you even function with hooves? I can take talking horses like Lion King but this is just wrong. But giving horses hands would've been even worse. That ruined furries for me. Now I see a hot furry girl on a bed and I immediately notice something annoying like she doesn't have hooves for feet when she should, or if she does have hooves I don't like it because I like feet. I like anime girls now, and NO nekomimi

Ariel was designed as an anime girl and apparently she was based on Miyazaki's girls. You can tell because she has an actual forehead and a braincase. Interesting how many anime heads even with big sailor moon eyes and no nose etc. actually fit better on the basic loomis proportions compared to western animation characters, who look like neanderthals with sloping foreheads, their hairlines starting right above the brow.

>Philo Barnhart, an animator on the original "Little Mermaid," reflected on what it was like designing Ariel, saying that supervising animator Glen Keane brought up the idea of taking inspiration from Hayao Miyazaki's work. "'What if we did our own version of an anime girl character?'" Keane suggested, according to Barnhart, who found the idea intriguing. "They have the little traditional triangular face, you know, with a little pointy chin and the big eyes with like — they have a million highlights in them," the animator said.

the part about the triangular pointy chin makes sense to me, looking at Miyazaki's Clarisse from Lupin for example. here's a piece of concept art where her design is intentionally contrasted to Disney's previous styles.

Ehh I still don’t understand. Ariel still has majority of her looks from Eilonwy from Black Cauldron. And Eilonwy’s chin isn’t entirely round. And Aurora from Sleeping Beauty has a triangular chin too so they weren’t entirely contradicting past designs.
>>
File: sb17.jpg (171 KB, 1600x1179)

>>7976608
Well a lot of anime art was also inspired by Disney. I think Aurora has a more rounded fuller chin than Ariel, not mannish by any means but not the almost anime-like face like Ariel. Eilonwy was a Milt Kahl design, one of the last designs from the old guys and still in that house style that emerged after Sleeping Beauty. Eilonwy was also drawn younger with a rounder face than Ariel. Mermaid was done when all the old heads were fully gone and maybe new influences came in.
>>
>>7975069
just switch to the different style. if you've truly been drawing for years, then it shouldn't be an issue.
>>
>>7976466
>taking inspiration
Giving her a pointy chin and bigger eyes doesn't mean she was designed "as an anime girl." Plus she's so much more dynamic and interesting than anime. Anime has stiff plastic faces and relies on emoji expressions and dialogue to communicate emotions. With Ariel you can see what she's thinking from very subtle expressions. Calling her anime is an insult and blatant appropriation.

I don't know who you're arguing with but tezuka copied disney wholesale. the anime style is a direct offshoot of disney.
it's not an own just a fact.
>>
>>7976742
You're thinking about this way too black and white and autistically. Mermaid is not an anime. It doesn't have sweatdrops or chibis or shit like that. The designers probably looked at a lot of shit to arrive at the final look. If one of those things was Miyazaki's works which happened to have a type of redhead girl the designers liked and when those designers say they used it as inspiration it's fair to say that Ariel was partly based on anime.
>>
>>7975069
>>7976747
>You said they were contradicting past designs with pointy chins even though that's not entirely true.
I didn't say that. I hadn't replied to this particular argument beforehand. And your point that we could be dissecting what they said in different ways is fair.
I'm just pointing out that you are literally telling people to disbelieve their lying eyes. Those guys still said what they said.
Look, I know /ic/ is an argumentative place, and being on 4chan means you have to enjoy the odd troll or two. But you're not gaslighting anyone at this point, you're gaslighting yourself. It's a weird look, and it doesn't help make your case if there's any genuineness to it.

Do you understand taking inspiration is not the same thing as "Ariel was designed as an anime girl?" Literally nobody thinks of Ariel being anime because she is fundamentally not an anime girl.

there is fundamentally no such thing as anime or an anime girl because it's all just cartoons which were inspired by Disney styles to begin with. Nobody said Mermaid is anime and it's not even faux-anime. You can interpret what the animators said as one of their goals being achieving the same appeal as Miyazaki girls. Copying is not required

Most of /ic is zoomers who grew up on post-2005 anime, so it is to be expected.
