This is one type of art I never see a thread on. Feel free to discuss golden age cartooning or your skills with these kinds of exaggerated styles.
>>
I like it. Even just going through the book copying all the art will help you. The section on animating will also help you make more dynamic pictures.

There's a reason for that.

I find there's more value in starting with the stuff you actually wanna draw and then you'll appreciate the academic stuff more once you've run into the problems they're meant to solve.

Yeah I bet you've accrued so much 'value' with that approach

Disney animators are overrated humorless faggots who’ve never once drew anything funny in their lives, I learn from the GOATs Tex Avery and Bob Clampett (but of course I know the importance of also drawing from life and studying anatomy)
>>
Haters gonna hate. Here's a couple studies I've done from this book. It's fun.
>>
Are there other good books or sources of learning how to cartoon like the Preston Blair one?
>>
>>7981755
The Richard Williams' book, "The Animators Survival kit"? Though I haven't read through it, so I can't say if it does teach drawing at all, or if it's purely about animation, but William's does draw in that nice cartooning/animation style.
There's Also the Famous Artist's Course's Cartooning version... "The Famous Artist's Cartooning Course".
Also, there's the Walter T Foster book, "Modern Cartoon".

Those are the ones I can quickly remember/see in my books folder. I'm sure there are other great ones.

Anyone have advice on how to improve my art? I feel I take more influence from contemporary Spumco/Spumco-adjacent stuff than golden age cartoons but John Ks blog has encouraged me to study the classics.

What’s the point of the red line if your forms aren’t following it?

I feel like your drawings are looking pretty good. Do you have any finished illustrations? If not, there'd be no better method of improving than doing some more polished coloured drawings, with backgrounds and some sort of context other than 'zany expression for reasons'.

If you're asking because you want to change up your style, then I guess I can only really suggest studying other artists that aren't spumco related.

>Do you have any finished illustrations?

Yes, both digitally and on paper, but that’s definitely one of the aspects I’m trying to improve upon, I do also color physically with art pencils and markers, but they usually look kind of scratchy.

>with backgrounds

That’s another thing I am trying to improve upon, sometimes when I draw I feel they look too simple or "underdetailed" if that’s the right word, I’m sure I gotta do more studies.

>some sort of context other than 'zany expression for reasons'.

I regularly do draw "comics" or gag cartoons with my characters, I try to stray away from making the drawings look wacky for wackiness sake when used in context and making every gesture or expression fit the characters personality. Sometimes I do worry if I drew "stock expressions" or not.

>If you're asking because you want to change up your style, then I guess I can only really suggest studying other artists that aren't spumco related.

I have a decent amount of non-Spumco influences, most of which are other 90’s cartoonists like David Feiss, Genndy Tartakovsky, Stephen Hillenburg etc etc. but I also take inspiration from guys like Tim Burton and some more niche ones like Brandt Peters and Trey Surtees. I’m also fond of underground "ugly" artists like Basil Wolverton and Ken Reid and do plan on looking more into them.

In terms of classic cartoons I have seen a lot of Clampett shorts and some Fleischer and Avery ones as well, but that’s another thing I gotta branch out more with.

Sherm Cohen (SpongeBob artist) also has a good drawing book
>>
>>7981773
The Famous Artist Cartoon Course is really dense and has great lessons on extremely specific topics like folds and drapery, drawing appealing women, and working with panels. Even if you aren't drawing cartoons I recommend it.

Hooo those books are shit besides Preston and Richard Williams.

Is there a reason why cartoonists find teeth so fun to draw? Toothy expressions are the best and I’ve pretty much mastered drawing teeth because of that.

I read that booklet twice and I copied it a lot, that`s a great /BEG/ book to both illustrators and animators.
>>7981736
TASK is such an interesting book, I keep picrel as a reminder that you can be a good animator even if you aren`t the best artist but it`s in your best interest to learn to draw anyway.
>>
>>7981736
A bit before your picrel there`s a quote like this:

"First of all, kid, learn to draw. You can always do the animation stuff later."

It`s my favorite quote because nowadays you have stuff like 3D Animation and Puppets at Laika but even those types of animators generally have some level of drawing skill, even if they`re BEG.

Good designs. Now try making them act in storyboards just as roughly. Get a feel for their look, presence in the environment, and expression.

This, the best looking cartoonists mastered both realism and art, yet these days a lot of kids seem to forget that.

I don’t see any modern animators on par with the greats from Spumco because of this.

Chuck Jones strikes me as the kind of guy to draw Looney Tunes porn on his own time, you gotta learn anatomy to draw that well.
